Jake got knocked out again:

He continued to do tricks in the best trick contest after hitting his head, which he now does not remember doing. He did not skate the final the next day. I guess someone should have made him stop skating after he got knocked out.

There should definitely be a rule for concussions at contests.

What concerns me the most is that these are just the hits we see when the camera is on. How many hits are these big bowl skaters taking to the head when the camera is not on them?

Gary Rogers: Oh, she hit her head.

Brandon Graham: She was 11 two days ago.

Gary: She smacked her noggin.

Brandon: So her silver medal at X Games Minneapolis actually makes her -

Gary: Can we get some concussion protocol?

I actually can’t believe that stupid fuck announcer from that xgames game of skate trainwreck from 2014 still has a job.

The ironic part about Wooten's continual head smacks is that he was kinda Mike Vallely's protege. After the two met at Woodward, Mike V hooked him up on Elephant—now Mike V is probably the most helmeted homie out there.

And even Wooten's board sponsor is glorifying head injuries with the cover image for "vs. Everything":

Jake should start up a separate series just for the habitually concussed, he would really have an advantage.

At a professional contest you shouldn't be allowed to continue if you get clearly knocked out. The risk of a 2nd concussion and serious damage after is way too high. With no skaters with medical coverage after, or some sort of union monitoring them, its scary as hell given what we've seen in the NFL and NHL. I'd add, if I was a contest sponsor I wouldn't allow it, just due to the potential liability. Now, if you are in a private contractor situation where you knock yourself out, then try again at a spot, that is on you.

Whether pro or an am contest, each team should have a representative (like a coach) making the call: "Hey, get off the field! You're bleeding out of your ears." It's wild that there aren't more horror stories from the Deathmatch events, for instance.

Concussion denial happens i feel where people don't want to accept that they just took a hit that will affect them forever.  Plus your sideways from being fucked up and woozy so alot of people do the dumb thing and keep going. The Protocol would be good but I dunno if skating is built for protocol.

One of the hot topics of the day was use of helmets in competitive skateboarding. Shiran Habekost led the discussion and presented data on head injuries in competition and valuable information on concussions. WIth many voices in the room, ranging from both the younger and older generations of competitive skateboarders, many were on the side of helmets, especially as it related to park skating. Further discussion is warranted and valued and all competitors on this journey are encouraged to contact rider representatives with input.

Stab: Is this something that needs to become accepted in surfing, particularly surfing big waves?

Albee Layer: It'll be like a lot of sports where the norm is not wearing it, then a lot of guys will end up brain dead and dumb and you'll start to see a transition.

I went to Nora's skating contest and all the girls wore helmets and none of the guys do. Two or three of those guys got knocked out and then skated another run afterward. It's this weird tough thing, but to me, you're not being tough, you're just sort of being stupid.

Fighting through pain [like breaking an arm] is one thing, but when you're doing something which makes you a burden on other people, that's just selfish and stupid.

This shit is fucked.

I have experienced this too.

I was trying to crook the high ass bar of a bump and slid out and hit my head on the rail. I was bleeding pretty bad and had to sit for a good 30 mins.

Decided to give it one more go and had almost the exact same slam.

That one changed shit. Concussion big time. I couldnt see properly for weeks and it would come and go. I'd sleep for crazy periods of time and had no stamina at all(ie falling in the shower while shaking like it was the biggest task in the world)

If you hit your head, homies get on the phone to 911 and try to get an ice pack on the homies kneck asap. Keep him calm and still even if you have to be an asshole about it.

And for god sakes dont release it at footy.

Footage of people hitting their heads make me feel sick. That clip in that Flip video with Arto looking dead laying in his own puke is fucked.

They should definitely have concussion protocols at any contest, I guess I'm not surprised it's not a thing, but that's really sad.

I've gotten back into skating as an old dude, and I started wearing a helmet because I've started to learn to skate transition which I never did as a teen, so I got one because the combo of "knowing how to skate" plus absolutely not knowing how to skate transition seems like a recipe for me to smack my head at some point.

I've had one other old dude tell me it was cool to see someone who's "good" actually wearing a helmet, and how he should be wearing his. And I feel like I noticed the little kids forced to wear helmets at the park looking at me like "hey there's actually one adult wearing one for once".

Maybe it's lame to wear a helmet to do flat ground tricks and a rock fakie on a quarter pipe and that makes me a kook, but I'm too old to give a shit what other people think.
