Game of S.K.A.T.E. App
« on: June 05, 2020, 07:56:31 AM »
I have been looking for a application to play Game of S.K.A.T.E. with video connection or something similar.

I couldn't find one so I made an app for that, it's called Distant S.K.A.T.E. It's not exactly real time video connected S.K.A.T.E. as it is based on sending single clip as one trick. Rules are also slight modified and can be found in the app.

It is available on iOS and Android. You can challenge me if you dare. My nick is distant skate.

What you think of this? Cool idea? Need more of these kind of things?

Interesting idea. I wonder if it’s possible that the only way you can see the trick is to allow access to your camera, and then use that window to film your attempt.
Get coding.

Great points! I considered about the video call possibilities. The Berrics already made a Battle at the Quarantine video series with just basic video calls. The one try policy should be real time and video call does it just okay. I don't like reinventing the wheel. That's why I tweaked the rules a bit.

In this app, you have endless tries on every trick. Basic idea is to send difficult tricks and opponent has couple days time to learn them and reply.

I'm planning on game mode that allows only one try, just like in regular S.K.A.T.E. It could be implemented like putting the in-app camera on, camera films for the next 30 seconds and sends the clip automatically. That leaves user no possibility to cheat (hopefully).

That's still in planning phase. The apps has been released couple days ago and will be updated a lot based on feedback.

That's a great idea, and I feel like this could be a great motivator for me to actually learn some new shit! Normal games of skate get stale after a while when you do the same tricks every time and your friend does his and nobody ever really learns anything new in one or two tries. Great way to stay connected with your skate friends in other cities too.

I play chess on an app like this and it's fun, only problem is that I usually end up forgetting to answer at some point and the game ends in a forfeit. But I guess in this you'd just get a letter and the games moves on.

I think too that infinite tries is a huge motivation for new tricks. For now games have one week timeout. After that the game is just deleted. Push notifications could be good for this kind of situations in some apps, but I don't think it works on this one. I think the best solution would be to just check the app when you're skating. It could become routine or something.
