What a great clip! I find it important to remember bad times but as Marek said the whole town is a communist museum and this other guy that skateboarding is an expression of freedom. It makes sense to me to have something energetic and youthfull like skating in such a bad historically-loaded place. I really hope stalin plaza stays the way it is for a long time to come.

That was dope. I skated that place like 20 years ago, the ground was already really rough (which somehow never shows in videos), with a lot of cracks between the tiles. Still an amazing spot to skate. So good that they managed to save it! I think having people skate and do graffiti and just generally having a good time on top of Stalin is exactly the right way to deal with that place's history.

Also, Deedz has something special going on.

"No one wants to see communist monuments here, we're over that shit" I guess he would have preferred to skate the Hitler square, and see fascist monuments, cuz at that time those were the only two options. This dude is clueless about historical events that happened only 80 years ago.

The music in this thing was borderline offensive. “What does Eastern European music sound like? - Well it’s like a bunch of accordions and shit and they’re skating so it’s like hip-hop beats with accordion samples...”. The fuck?!
Other than that, it was good to see other parts of the plaza be skated. Definitely thinking about saving up and making it out there at some point.

nice try.
The '80s were the worst period. You had these horrible pop bands growing their hair and calling themselves metal.

Both are bad and skating it it's the best way to raise a middle finger to dictatorship.
I live in Nuremberg in Germany, here we have what's was the Nazy Party rally grounds, and currently people use it as a skatespot, there's Music Festivals held on it, the gardens around are full of people from all ethnicities doing barbecues and hanging around, it's like the exact opposite of what the nazis wanted and its great.

One built a bunch of death camps around europe and started the bloodiest war in the history of the world, killed roughly 30 million soviets, the other defended their existance and eradicated the third reich from europe, but sure both are bad... democratic peace loving america good, too bad they didn’t offer their solution. marek would be skating the FDR plaza

Im not trying to divorce stalin from his crimes, just giving credit where its due, under his command that the soviets crushed the nazis and disrespecting their monuments is equivalent to grieving the defeat of hitler.

You just showed up here and you already seem to be one of the dumbest posters I’ve seen.
I thought it was pretty clear that the way USSR eradicated the third reich was by literally throwing swaths of people at Germany - most of them being being heavily underarmed and undertrained. Hence the 30 million losses. With that being said, you’re not even taking into account the unimaginable amounts of innocent people that died in soviet labor camps, a lot of whom were cream of the crop intellectuals.
The Stalin era of USSR is what most people in Eastern Europe associate communism with. Sure, there was Khrushchev afterwards and things went fairly smooth for a couple decades (if you ignore international relations), but overall Stalin is probably responsible for more human deaths than Hitler.
As Marek says in the video - the architectural landscape is already evocative enough of that time period. Regional governments made sure that Soviet regalia and symbology is present in every building’s facade. There’s no need to remind people of the suffering their ancestors went through with a museum because the reminders are already everywhere.

16 million military casualties. That’s more than half of 30 mil. And that’s just the official statistic. The Stalin administration was notorious for falsifying casualty statistics, just as the Gulags technically did not exist. And that is still more than any other country in WWII
I’ve seen the architectural landscape with my own eyes. Depressing is an understatement. I don’t think I should elaborate any further on it.
Never in my life have I thought I would encounter a Stalin apologist. A person who literally gained his position of power through racketeering and intimidation tactics. You are a real piece of shit, my friend.

The Government of Russia, following a study conducted by the Russian Academy of Science in 1993, puts the deaths at 26.6 million, including about 8.66 million military deaths. https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/wwii-casualties-by-country.html

you're just uneducated and emotionally misled to be depressed by architecture and not understand the significance and human suffering behind it.

I see your level of thinking hopefully you'll objectively research this era of history a bit deeper from all sides and understand how much western historical narratives are just biased geo-political instruments to control influence around the world (who controls the present controls the past).

Fun freebie facts to get u started: Mussolini was a British agent, Hitler was funded by the bank of England and US investments, the entente laid Hitler the red carpet to annex Czechoslovakia and use the industry to re militarize(Munich agreement), where as Stalin was the only one in the willing to defend the Czechs however was blocked by Poland and Romania that had an Alliances with Hitler. this is all documented general knowledge: google is your friend, my friend.

Shut up. I don’t care how many WWII facts you try to bring up, there’s nothing to justify this scale of political repression and literal murder. As long as you’re ignoring this, you’ll never understand.
