I have Thunders and never stick with 53 OG Classics. I’d like to see it stick out more but it’s really not a massive issue.

I'm riding that exact set up now (with bones swiss and 1/8"  risers) and am loving it. Tried a few different wheel shapes lately just to realize I should have never strayed from classics.

It's funny to me that based on this topic's posts the majority of people who have "That thunder baseplate problem" are people that ride Indy's. I already know what responses that comment will invoke from the cult of Indy but whatever, you know it's bs.

If you really want to ride thunder's but want more wheel clearance then grind down your bottom bushings or use 2 top bushings. It'll bring your wheelbase in a smidge and give you more clearance.

How's the kingpin clearance? Can't tell much from those angles. Shalom

Pretty sure that's what Ishod does (per nine club stop n chat). Would love to hear how it goes.

*Edit: I'm talking about the two top bushing thing, not swapping baseplates

I don't think it changed at all in comparison to the thunder baseplate.

For real though: anyone on here mixing and matching hangers and baseplates?

I have a 70s style banana board my buddy in Salem, OR made that's maybe 7 inches wide, and when I got it I was too cheap to buy a set of 129s. What I ended up doing was harvesting the hangers from my friend's plastic Kryptonics "Penny" style board that she had but never used and put them on Indy baseplates with Bones medium bushings. They ended up turning really nice and the hangers seem to be durable enough to handle typical cruising and some light transition skating. For anyone with a desire for skinny trucks but with little money I recommend using hangars from Penny boards on a legit baseplate, it might work out as well for you as it did for me.

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

Idk

I don’t think the issue is that the baseplate doesn’t touch, it’s that it’s so thin and far back that a lot of times when you go for a long slide you just stick. You have to do those slides that make that screech sound to get a good slide. I stick so much on thunders.

I completely understand what some people are saying, but the degree to which they are going to either make a point or deem these trucks unskateable due to this "flaw in design" is in itself flawed, as the baseplate does indeed touch and grind on things that people skate, as per that Instagram pic I saw and thought relevant to this thread.

On the half a dozen setups with Thunders that I have, most have some baseplate wear (but a lot less than other setups with Indy / other trucks) so it is just one of those things.

Also sometimes it is interesting to post something that would revive a thread, not just to be argumentative or a pain, as I think there is room for a genuine discussion about this, more so than just people complaining they can't nose or tail slide on Thunders.

Happy to watch, read and comment as needed...

:)
I'd love to try Thunders again. I like the look and Guy makes them look real fun to skate. I just love nose slides and bs tails and I switched to venture bc of the slide issue. I like to discuss this sorta stuff too! I've been really tempted to ride some Thunders again even before this thread popped up.

Don't do this. Turning sucked, it felt heavy as fuck and only made sliding a tiny bit better
Skated like this for an hour and switched back to the thunder baseplates.
I could still try old destructo and krux baseplates

Is kingpin clearance on thunders that good? My Ace and Indy kingpins gotta be nice and rounded off before I have a chance at front smiths. I haven't skated thunders in probably almost 10 years so I don't remember.

My kingpin nut is ground down but the kingpin itself never hits.
Except on my old 147, they have zero kingpin clearance, but the 148 are good.

Ben Degros has covered the kingpin clearance for 148 and up and it’s just as good as Indy, neither are as good as Venture.

Honestly just go faster.

You’d have to dig through his truck madness videos I think it’s in a review of one of the Thundy models or the Thundy vs Indy comparison
