i think skaters used to drink more. especially the role models. the whole vibe was more loose and disinhibited. so was skating and all the high jinx.

i mean sure, there was always a lot of weed and other stuff. but i think the new generation is more sober, more serious athletically. or just more chilled out by weed.

Now it's less aggressive, improvised, in your face, loose, and so on.
but more precise, neater, more accurate, more straightforward.

in the current generation, baker-makers are irrelevant. but in the slow-motion clips, for example, a lot of emphasis is placed on precise catches and such.

what i'm writing may be complete nonsense. and i mean it in a non-judgmental way. both sides are great skating.
I actually have no idea what i am talking about

Social media really ruined a part of skateboarding, and I'm a young person, people only caring about looks and their IG just takes away from a proper session. On the other hand I think that a lot of these people will simply quit skating in a few years, you all know the type, if they don't they'll eventually grow into society and stray away from these things as responsibility builds up. BieberStance may have a point, not even considering booze so much, but it's like skateboarding doesn't have that reckless energy all the time, it doesn't look dangerous, it doesn't look transgressive, it's just an activity. Ironically the Supreme videos still get some of these vibes with all the clips of those dudes hanging out and goofing around, there's a sweet middle ground between kids being assholes and kids being weird just because of a different era.

Not a fan of social media. However, i'm old (and sometimes wear a tin foil hat).

That saiiiiiiiiddddd, I usually skate a spot in a major metro city where a lot of folks skate/chill (not so much running these days). The vibe is the same as ever. People hang, people drink, people smoke, laughs are had, sometimes someone gets a trick, and it's like a social club. It cuts ages, demos, skill levels, etc. Similar how it operated in 80s, 90s, 00s, and 10s. And, in my conversations, the kids are just like previous generations. (They even convinced me to get some loose/relaxed jeans recently and i couldn't be happier.)

What I'm trying to say, if you base your reality off of social media, yeah, I can see how someone could get bummed on the new generation/skating. However, the kids, old dudes, and others out there skating are, in reality, alright. And we should be careful in confusing the two .

I think you are pretty much spot on, at least for what I am experiencing. I see teenagers stretch at skateparks and talk about recovery and nutrition etc. that was unheard of when I was a teenager. Hah,  That is what I do now in my mid thirties. We also got drunk more often in my teens and it was overall a bit more of an aggressive vibe: „don’t be a pussy!“ We didn‘t smoke as much weed or my friends who did eventually stopped skating.

There are way more girls skating now, which is rad. There are also much more older dudes still doing it.

What else: all the kids wear Nikes and Adidas now. It still attracts a lot of the troubled and weird kids. Kids are still always into the same silly trends. They still idolize certain skaters, but alot of them are insta skaters now. Many try to turn their group of Friends into a brand. People still make homie videos, which are usually released as clips on YouTube or Instagram.

I think the kids will be alright.

Old age is helluva drug, and I’m high as fuck on this shit right now.
Still not on the ‘Gram though, and still out there getting mine.
In your eye, youthful skateboarders!

This is absolutely still out there, real community. Instagram is like it's own little additional world, and most of us probably know well enough to stay away from those people that only exist inside of it. They are usually wearing Cariumas, so pretty easy to spot and steer clear.

That being said, IG is awesome in many ways. My buddy used to communicate with Pablo Ramirez about music and life through dm's and it meant a lot to have that connection without actually being able to meet him.  Just don't assign IG so much attention that you feel yourself disconnected from the communities and people in front of you, our brains need that type of relationship more.

3/4 of the threads posted on here look like this :

So I'd say the IG generation is doing just fine and it hasn't changed a thing in my skating, which is about as interesting as a neverending parade of fucking gray boxes.

I used to spend a lot of time on Instagram but i deleted it because it's better to just enjoy my life. But if kids wanna be on there, i don't care. Young people make mistakes. Better that mistake is being goofy in the timeline than any number of other terrible paths your life can take

Social media has ruined the world. Everyone thinks they are an expert on everything now yet knows nothing when their phone gets turned off. It’s a parasite. Zuckerberg is not your friend.

Bingo. Not to mention all the mental illness and suicide its had a hand in due to the constant false portrayal of reality. Pure evil.

The sheer number of gray headed geezers at the capitol riots was fucking shocking to me. Have to admit that was my eye opener as far as how fully ONLINE boomers have got recently. I was looking at the pictures in total disbelief. So many old morons. Although it probably didn't help, they didn't end up there watching Fox, they ended up there because of social media.

I grew up with the internet and now I'm 39 and seen it all. They only just stumbled on it through the worst possible door at the worst possible time.

No-comply best trick of all time. Got clays on my cruiser for those barefoot nose manuals in my swimming shorts.

Do you even slalom bro.

P.S.: Wooden box with handles for sale. Useful for drunken wife beating after a hard day at the factory.
