pre-assembled complete for small 7 yr old???
« on: September 07, 2021, 06:09:45 PM »
So a young friend of mine is turning 7 next month and is hoping to have a skateboard party in the parking lot of the tennis courts. Mom wants to get him a set up and asked for advice. I cautioned the that a new set up is going to be between $30-$150, with $30 being from Kmart and absolutely sucking and $150 being a shop set up that's too good to be potentially left in the rain or sent thru puddles. She figures about $100 is reasonable for a birthday gift. I know there are completes in that price range, but what I can't wrap my mind around is what a good size would be for the kid. Should he just start ripping on a full size or do we need to get him something shorter and less wide? I've always just hooked up the little kids in my life with old full size, but if it's gonna be brand new, it might as well fit the kid...

Any of y'all with little kids in yer life, please help!

I would go 7.75 or 8”. Slightly wider and bigger is more stable for the kiddos.

Small shape for a beginner kid. Decent components that they can learn on and don’t suck. Soft top in lieu of griptape that way should the kid knee/butt board, they won’t get all shredded up.

Good choice for those under 10. Anything under 7.5" I recon, can go wrong with the complete from Santa Cruz, DLX or even DSM. They're pushing around and butt boarding, so anything that roll decently (softer wheels) is good enough. Seen lots of parents spend way too much on their kids 1st board ($200 and up) and losing interest within a month.

Got my son one of those Blind boards a few years ago when he was 4. Rode like 7 times. Built him a nice setup: Prime 7.5 blank (made a Man Wolfs graphic sticker for it), Ventures, Spitfire 53s. It collects dust in my basement. He's only currently into baseball and Minecraft.

He’s rebelling against his father. My son plays Fortnight and makes ‘content’ on his You Tube channel. Then he comes to a skate park with me and roller skates!!! It’s like a big FU dad...

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I would suggest a paternity test.

I got my nephew a mini logo with the softer wheels.  It was a great place to start....eventually switched out to harder wheels and upgraded the deck.

Y'all are awesome. Thank you. Little homie will be stoked. I feel what youre saying about collecting dust, and i warned the mom, but she wants to drop a bill and get a decent board... Not my kid or my dough! Any of these will be an upgrade from the plastic baseplates on my first set of trucks, but man, my first variflex was legendary ha ha ha

For real. Good looking out!

Dad of  10 and 8 year olds here.   8 year old is on her second board, 10 is on her 5th.

At age 7 I had them on Powell 7.5 or 7.75 completes.  Powell complete decks are poplar instead of maple, but they are kids so who cares.

Where they are nice is that all Powells come with Mini Logo trucks (7.63") that turn quite well and the 7.5 and 7.75 come with 90a Mini Logo wheels that are good in the driveway.

It's a good starter board that you can put some harder wheels on for the park if they start to rip.

My 10 year old just built up an 8" board with Thunders and STF.  She feels more comfortable on the wider board and the STF are faster.  She went with Thunder instead of Mini Logo because she was raiding my stash and my Thunders were almost not ridden and my Mini Logos were pretty well used.  I think she would have been better on the Mini Logos, but...

I always suggest any of the DSM completes ( blind, enjoi, Almost). Softer bushings, 92a wheels, Tensor trucks. Under $100 where I work and most other places as well. Just loosen up the axle nuts a bit ( they’re cranked tight for shipping purposes) and should be good to go.

I put my kid on a small Real complete w/ mini logo trucks and soft wheels around that age. In retrospect, I would have gone with something more like one of the Powell retro mini completes. The popsicle was good for her later on when she wanted to start learning some tricks, but a retro board with bigger wheels is more fun to push around the street on.
