If I ever met Tony Hawk, I'd address him as Anthony.

Nice!
Been wondering where he's been lately.
Glad to know he's alive and kicking.

agreed, can't believe i wound up reading the whole thing!  One surprising tidbit, dude's been in the bitcoin game since 2012!  Can't imagine what he's sitting on if he stuck with it since then. It was roughly $5 back then...

Also this photo just gave me the wildest flashbacks of what it felt like in the summer being a teenage skater.  Loose clothes, energy to burn, a spring in your step...

Great interview!

I think Tony exists in his own dimension where he is the truest skate rat but do the weirdest stuff that would label any other skater as a kook at the same time. Interested in the doc after those Blender comments!

And awesome job with digging the archives for the images.

Sick interview, pretty crazy for a UK skate shop to be able to get access to the Birdman like that, even if it is Slam. Respect.

That ramp looks fucked

Great interview. We're lucky to have such a level headed and intelligent guy as the face of skateboarding

That was a pretty good in depth interview. I especially enjoy any BPSW era talk. Loved early Birdhouse (Klein is my dude).

Also if I meet him again, I want to call him Mike Hawk or Tony Honk.

Dumb story, but one of the times I've met him was ... 1991? Me and my friend were really punk-rocked-out at the time, but he was talking to us, and kids in between our convo. But this little kid came up to Tony and asked:
"TONY! TONY! Are you the Thrasher?"
He kind of looks at us, then says to the kid "Yes, I'm the thrasher"
Kid goes "YES!" and walks off, super stoked. We kinda giggle to each other but we all got it. Dude is the best ambassador.

Out of all of the pros I have met - Hawk, Cab, Hosoi, Danforth, Chris Miller, Gonz, J. Lee, Chatman were EASILY the coolest. Oh & Hensley also!

Rad interview, Tony really is the best.

Though back in 1989,  it's an ollie blunt on the vert ramp, not a blunt to fakie... no matter what kids call it today.

did you ask him about his eyebrows?

He explained on Hawk vs wolf podcast that he dyes his hair for commercials and that he also dyed his eyebrows because he felt people were bullying him and making fun of him.

The dude always had pretty light hair, and with age you get grey ... so your eyebrows naturaly "fade" with some dudes. They're there, you just can't see them properly

When Tony Hawk was in town for the Boom Boom Huckjam, my friends found out which hotel he was staying at and they went up to the front desk and asked which room he was staying in, because they were his nephews and "they just wanted to see their Uncle Tony". They actually gave it to them, they chickened out on bothering the birdman though.

Not trying to throw too much mud at hawk but that sounded like one of those times where people admit to like one tenth of something hoping people won't dig deeper. There were some times in the Lizzie ep where he scratched his head and it looked like he had a combover or maybe even a toupee. Unfortunately I think he is in a position where he has to try his best remain somewhat young looking. I'd love to see a Bruce Willis looking tony hawk but that might not sell many video games

Let's hear that J. Lee story

Met him twice, one in 1989 and one in 90 (if not, both were in 90). First time was Gonz and Lee (amongst others, Mullen and Dune were at one of these) Blind/World. First time, went to see Gonz but left talking about what a badass Lee was. He was amazing. Only talked to him a few minutes but he was nice. But we became instant fans. Second time, I don't think Gonz was there, but Ron Chatman was this time. Lee and Chatman destroyed the demo and we hung out with them a lot longer after the demo. He would talk about anything to anyone and had full attention. Gave us a shit ton of stickers, my friend got a shirt. Such a cool guy. We left the park and went to mall to hang out. We were by these escalators when Lee and Chatman strolled into the mall. We were like "wuuuuut". Jason asked us where the music store was so we led him up to Camelot Music upstairs. He said "thanks guys" and him and Ron went in to check out tapes. Pretty sure I remember them looking at Joy Division. We bailed because we figured we'd hogged enough of their time that day.
