I got to go to San Fran for 10 days a few years back, stayed with my cousin.
Of course is did some skate tourism, walked around, saw the Cardiel Golden rail and stuff.
My friend gave me directions to the China Banks, and I went there with visions of the Bones Brigade carving over the benches, thinking I’d do a few, and split.
When I got there, I was like fuck. They are almost not even banks, they’re more like walls. I rolled up a couple times trying to kick turn and was like ‘Nope”.
My dreams were fading fast. The banks are steep with only a tiny bit of tranny at the bottom.
I scaled down my goals and was like “Maybe I can wallride onto one of the benches”.
Started trying, but gave up. It was hard.
I sat down and looked at the benches for a while. I was lucky, no one was there, and decided to see if I could go fast, how far I could carve across a bench.
Tried again, faster than before. The speed and low approach angle helped me get through the tight tranny, but wasn’t coming anywhere near clearing the bench.
Feeling disappointed, I sat down again, ready to give up. Even if I made it over the bench, can I make it through the tight tranny again?
I finally thought that I’d probably never have another chance to skate here, so I gave it one more go. Started pushing at like 80 or 90% my top speed, and started clearing a short bench.
A few more tries, and I finally put down a carve over. I’m not much of a skater, I don’t really battle for tricks, so that took me a while. And it was the best souvenir I could have gotten from my trip to SF.
So if you go there before they demolish it, go fast
