How can I hold smith grinds longer on ledges?

I can do them on rails and the end of an ledge. When I start to far from the Ende I grind a few inches and the deck just falls down. I can land them, but I could not hold them any longer.

Any advice what I could do wrong?

Go fast and balance it like you're doing a dipped 5-0 grind. Lean back on it instead of standing on it vertically.

What he said pretty much. You have to come at an angle and then sit down on your back leg. It's important to not get your weight too far on top, you sort of push from the heel and lean back a bit, if that makes sense.
Speed is key for length of course, but you can start with learning to pop out in the middle  and then go faster as you get more comfortable.
They can be really sticky on "stones", granite, marble and such, but it's usually pretty easy to grind on angle iron.

This still happens a lot on ledges


Anybody has an idea why I absolutely have no issue on rails , but on ledges? If it’s the leaning back , so why I don’t have the issue on rails?

Leaning back and shooting out is way less painful than the typical Smith slam of missing the target and crumpling forward. Good luck.

I think it could be about the toeside wheel being on the ledge and depending on the ledge the kingpin dragging.
I used to have a similar problem (altho rather than fix it I just now can't really Smith rails either lol)
some friends were saying you have to dig in your back heel
Like pinch (but this was years before people said pinch) to take some pressure off the toe wheel and kingpin. Another friend said the opposite and press more on the toe so the truckis a bit more even on-top of the ledge. They could all Smith like it was nothing so I guess different methods work for different people

Yeah and on rails there’s like a lock that prevents you from dipping down as well, you don’t lock like that on a ledge

What everyone else said… stay on your back foot in the pocket put your weight back

Every ledge will have a slightly different feel to it, main thing is finding the sweet spot for pinching your heel on the back truck and having you rear shoulder over your tail

Think of it like your foot is just centered smack in the middle of your tail going across.  Your weight should be on the arch of your foot running from where your heel starts to where the ball of your foot starts.  You want to be right over it like a 50-50, leaning away is alright for shorter grinds where you pop out but your nose will dip if you try to hold them like that.

That’s my biggest issue that my nose dips and I just fall off the deck.

That’s my biggest issue that my nose dips and I just fall off the deck.

I’ll try it different tomorrow.

I had a very similar nose dip issue, if you think of having your shoulders over your back foot you will naturally shift your weight into holding that heel pinch on the back truck

what I am saying at its most basic is to lean back
