What are the reasons some pros don't have board sponsors?
« on: May 21, 2023, 04:20:29 PM »
When a pro doesn't have a board sponsor is it because they don't want one, don't want to settle for certain companies, or is it because no company wants them?

With some of these guys it seems like they should just take a sponsor to get the product and whatever royalties even if it's not as good a situation as they wanted or used to have.

I feel like back in the day if you didn't have a board sponsor then you pretty much weren't even pro anymore, but today pros can go long time with no board sponsors.

How hard can it be?  Make a few boards for that pro, sell them, every gets a little something.  You need to ride something.

Each case is probably going to be different, but being pro means your commitment is work. There isn’t much money in board sponsorship, so perhaps some of the people we are guessing about just can’t be bothered working for shitty pay or maybe they will only work for shitty pay if it’s with their mates.

While it's definitely not the reason every time, a lot of the pros who are great skateboarders but don't get the industry support they seem to deserve, are just people who are hard to work/hang out with, therefore being on teams doesn't workout. This sort of stuff tends to be much more important with board companies as the team is normally a bigger priority

This is exactly how it was explained to me by a pro. All but a very few select top pros are basically making minimum wage with deck sales.
