Definitely strange in 2023, but in all fairness, this is the foot placement freestylers used back in the 80s. I've seen street skaters adopt the method over the years.
[close]

Yeah I was gonna say I thought that was relatively orthodox
[close]
even when Ollie impossibles
First transferred over to street skating most did them like this. My guess is that if you are over 40, that’s your standard foot placement

I learned them the Templeton way but then I saw Dan Peterka do one set up regular fashion and it looked so much cooler that I switched up

Is that Ginwoo? I know talking shit about children is whack but I have to say I hate his style, this screenshot is a great example of that. Obviously one of the most skilled skaters ever but I do not want to watch him skate at all.

He might get over the little kid style and when he has I’ll be interested in seeing some of his skating
[close]

he is never going to change the way he places and holds his feet. that's just how he skates. that style, or foot placement in particular, is ingrained in him. just because you grow up doesn't mean you completely change the way you skate and how you stand on a board.
I don’t know if that’s true. When I learned to ollie I had my front foot waaaay back. As I got older I pretty much had it next to the bolts. My kickflip evolved too. I guess we’ll see.

That’s how impossibles used to be done

I’ve noticed more full foot on the back a lot more (Shane O’Neil, Dylan Jaeb)

Also the front foot invert for heelflip tricks

I think @grimcity does his like this.

I've tried it and there's definitely some merit to it, the board seems to naturally kinda spring back that way.

Took me forever to learn 360 flips, and i partially blame Mark Appleyard for his opening line in Photosynthesis

That front foot is barely on the board, it's closer to the back of the board than the middle. He does them more traditionally in every other clip i've seen, but being a Photosynthesis kid i latched onto this one

This is the one that comes to mind whenever unorthodox setting up goes.

Part of this is also the fisheye. Kalis and Reynolds place their front foot near the middle of the deck for Tre flips and that's how I learned them I can't get remotely close to doing one with my foot near the bolts like lots of dudes casually throw them out now.

Jeremy Wray doing every single flip trick with his foot in heelflip position was always a trip
[close]

I couldn't agree more. I thought it was strange how he took it so far. A few weeks ago I met him and this was how he shook my hand.

I think he just has to always take it to "11". He knows no other way.

Almost spit out my coffee at this wow.

apples for sure.  i learned to do them like that for a while, then for a couple years Daewon's front foot position on a flatground 3flip that was over the bolts got me to doing them like that.  idk when you are in the zone that position works awesome.

eventually reverted back to the kalis foot position.
where is home?

Yeah, I think I do 'em pretty traditionally... this is off a kicker, so my back foot's a bit light:

Pat G sets up his flicking foot damn near parallel to his board for kickflips/frontside flips

We'd always call this "the penguin". In the skinny board, tight trucks, big shoes days it was kinda hard to avoid your heels touching while setting up for certain tricks if you had big feet.

ahaha funny enough we used to say the same
That stance its still the base of my 3flips; I usually place the front foot in the middle of the board and tend to scrape a lot my griptape, also with the shoulders facing forward. It works for me  ;D

I honestly prefer looking at him instead of the other McDonalds style bigspin front board types.

I kickflip with my popping foot in the toeside pocket, but not at such a crazy angle. As I have quite open shoulders I find it balances out the trick for me.
