MFT fisheyes vs. Viltrox + Canon 8-15
« on: January 26, 2025, 05:03:23 AM »
I see people praising Viltrox + Canon 8-15 EF, is there a notable difference in quality besides the fisheye vignette visible? MFT fisheyes like Samyang cost a fraction of that.

On MFT I think a Meike 3.5mm is the way to go. I think JM Sneep proved that with the Pop full length.
I suppose if you were switching between MFT, APS-C, and FF bodies, and wanted to use the same lens on all of them, a Canon 8-15mm, sometimes used with a focal reducer, could make sense. Seems unnecessary at ~10x the price and ~4x the weight. Every fisheye will catch scratches, better to keep your costs low on that front if possible. In this case the look isn't even worse from the cheaper option, it's arguably better.

i have the laowa 4mm and because the lens barrel is shorter than the meike 3.5, you end up seeing the grip of my gh4 in the frame when shooting 4k. ive worked around it cropping into 4x3, but its kind of annoying. im tempted to get the meike, but alot of people are doing the canon 8-15 with a speed booster.

If you have a gh5 with anamorphic mode the meike 6.5 looks sick. Gh4 has anamorphic mode with some kind of firmware update.

I had a g7 back in the day with a meike 6.5 and it was pretty cool looking just has small vig. Not as wide as 3.5, but you don’t have to crop at all, just put into 4:3 timeline.

So, with Meike 6.5 and anamorphic, there would be only the corner vig pieces visible like in the Mosaic video? Or does it need additional cropping? Using Samyang 7.5 and anamorphic myself, there's no vig at all.

This is the response the guy gave me in the hd 4:3 thread.

“ Yes, I film in Anamorphic so I can use the whole sensor and film in 4:3 mode. Then I have to crop it. I like vig so for me it works.”

Lens is also a bit longer than the 3.5 so you don’t get the potential mic or handle in the shot.

Worth a try as I think it looks great in that edit. And the 6.5 has a lot sharper vig than the 3.5. Also if you have Amazon prime just buy it and try a test in your house and if you don’t like it box it back up and return it. They legit take any returns hahaha

Tried the Meike 6.5 in anamorphic. The footage seems ok, but requires scaling to about 125% to remove most of the vig. I'm not convinced yet - had some trouble focusing, need all the light available so shooting it aperture fully open. Might like the Samyang 7.5mm more.

You can also try the meike in not anamorphic mode. Then just put into a 4:3 timeline. This requires zero cropping, but has small vig. See this clip from ant Claravall. He has more on his Instagram as well.

Also maybe you should try a wideness test with both lenses.

The clip you linked looks good, need to investigate more. What is a wideness test?

Just setting up the camera with both lenses in the exact same spot in your house to see which one is wider. Something like this.
