gone to china, brb
« on: October 26, 2008, 11:30:48 AM »
so i'm departing for xi'an to stay with some friends in precisely 2 weeks and i'm curious, any far east slap pals?
the fellas im going to stay have got a few plans for us, but i need more. if anyone can give me some info on food/skate/drink/historical spots, it'd be much appreciated. travel tips would be especially important due to the fact that i don't know a lick of chinese and have no idea where to start. i'm really fuckin excited, my winter is gettin cut one month short and i plan on skating every god damn day that i can.

Xi An is one of the ancient capitals (pre Beijing) and is where the Tarrecota Warriors are. But that's a no brainer. My advice is to pick up a copy of Let's Go China 2008 (or 2009 if it's available). The Let's Go series is better than Lonely Planet and all the other travel books.

It'll be cold up north and in the area where you're going--can you get down south? HK, Guangzhou, Macau and even Shanghai have a little better weather and are more skateable.

The only phrase you need in Chinese is:

Wo shi mei guo ren, qing pian wo.

I'm living in HK for the moment. There seems to be quite a few good spots around but no skaters. Although, I'm sure they are lurking somewhere. China's full of modern malls and other developments that are pretty good for skating. That said, the bulk of the country is not exactly prime skating terrain and as you might expect, there are a lot of crowds around that can get in the way.

Not sure what the weather is like up North, but here in the Southeast, it's hot and sunny at the moment.

alright sluts, 3 days to departure and i'm about ready to wet myself. my homie at the shop hooked up 2 choco's, a cliche and a pair of howard selects for under two hundred and im pretty much set.

word, basically the plan is to fuck off every weekend to wherever because our "hosts" are still working and such, however they're tryin to get a week so that we could actually get some serious travellin done. thanks for the heads up, i'm definitely gonna try to make it down south, even though im sure whatever the weather is in xi'an will be better than in winnipeg. currently sittin at -4 not accounting the windchill and freezing rain.

Somebody watched Jeopardy yesterday.

You and the D00D have turned this thread into a horrible head-on-collision between a short bus full of regular kids and a van full of paraplegics.

Wo shi mei guo ren, qing pian wo. = my horse dong will wreck your insides?

It just means "im 'merican, gtfo".
you can also say "wo bu shuo zhong wen" , that means something along the lines of "I no speak chinese".
its pronounced:  woah boo shoe-awe joong when. try to sound like the people at your local chinese restaurant and maybe people will understand you.

hello - ni hao [nee how]
thanks - xie xie [shee-ye shee-ye] (if you can do angry cat sounds instead of sh, go with these)
you're welcome -  bukeqi [boo kö tshee]  (kö like in captain kirk]
goodbye - zai jian [dsay jee-en]

also sing this song about a little rabbit:

Naw, it means "I'm American, feel free to take advantage of me."

No bullshitting the best phrase to take with you is "bu hao yi si." Pronounced "boo how ee suh." It translates to something along the lines of "My bad" and endears folks. So you bump into someone, "bu hao yi si" You can't speak Chinese and you get confused, "bu hao yi si." You spill a little tea, "bu hao yi si." You get the picture. You'll come off as humble and down to earth, two things that don't come to mind when Chinese locals see white folks.

i've been to china 9 times.  the most important phrase i've learned in jin pay lie see (sp???)  it means "prepare to shit your pants"
if you're going to guangzhou check out Hero skate shop.  they are some good people.  Tim the shop owner will point you in the right direction.

Go to the city wall in Xi'an, rent a bike, and ride along it. Lots of fun.

Great Wall as well, lots of fun.

whuuaaa sher jianada jer!

fuck! made it! left at 6 am on sunday manitoba time, got here (xi'an) at 1030 china time. i think it ended being about 26 grueling horrible airport/plane hours. it sucked. we got drunk at some barbeque joint and drank 50 cent beers until 3 in the morning, bought a 2 dollar case and proceeded to take intoxication to new heights,  tried to set up my board then slept on the floor. on the bus ride from the airport, i scoped about 400 really REALLY good spots. this place is unreal.

Man, you're making me get all nostalgic... Keep working on that Chinese, it'll open all kinds of doors. When I was living there I had a friend come out to visit and I taught him "wo ai ni" meant thank you. So all week long he was going around straight faced saying wo ai ni to bus and taxi drivers, people on the street, whoever. It means I love you. Once a lady asked him to take a picture of her and her family at some tourist site and he handed the camera back to the lady and said wo ai ni. The WTF look on the lady's face was priceless.

Pics would be awesome. I haven't been since '02 and I bet I wouldn't even recognize the places I'd been.

And even if you're not vegetarian seek out a Buddhist restaurant attached to a temple. The concoctions they come up with are magical.
