It doesn't work that way. If you turn 18, you get your first call-up letter. But since you're still in high school, you just have to go the office and extend your call-up by 3 years. Then you finish high school, and get the call-up letter again. If you're going to an university, then you can extend your call-up again 3 years. But if you don't go, then you have to show up at the medical examination. You get a full check up physically and psychologically. That shit lasts like 8 hours starting 8am sharp. If you don't show up, you get a big-ass fine and still have to go next time. If you don't go next time, then you're going to jail. It's pretty fucking strict. The only good thing is that you get ~15 dollars for "transportation expences", which means beer and cig money for me, since i live so close to the city centre.

Sorry, if it's a bit confusing. Basically, if you're 18 and don't plan on getting further education, then you have to go to the army, assuming there isn't anything wrong with you. I've been to two medical excams and gotten 6 months extention, because "maybe my back and knees will get better"... No way, haha. And faking to be mentally ill is a big no-no. You'll be sent to a mental institution for further analysis and you're so-called "illness" will be on your permanent record. Try getting a job then.

yeah finnish army used to be bad ass like 70years ago
but nowadays it's just bunch of kids playing with guns in the woods for 5days, then going home in the weekends and get fat.

Do you guys have that "junior time", too? Meaning you're stuck in the army the first 3-4 months and can't go home (even on the weekends).

At the same time only few universitys can give you this chance to escape army, and its very expensive to get in there.

you can pay of, but it super sketchy, i've pay like 3000 Euro, it was in 2005, and right now its about 5000 - 10000 Euros, depend where in russia do you live.

one of my friends and really good skater Roma went there before they change it from 2 to 1 years, and lost 2 years of his life. He's come back few days ago. Hes ok, but for 2 years all he done there was some black job like cleaning and etc, they didn't learn him a shit.. thats really fucked up..
