i'm not doubting diabolik knows what's up, he obviously does. i took the geek route too and looked it up on wiki and have been listening to Faith and Seventeen Seconds albums by the cure all morning. heard a lot of the songs before but lots of gems that i've never heard before. definitely way, way darker and more atmospheric than xx. for me it feels almost too different to compare, like the similarities are about as strong as they would be with xx and the strokes. but i really like the dark sound and was hoping to find some gems from the genre.

yeah if he has been playing drums for 20 years he must be very close to 30 or above it... i wouldnt doubt he knows what hes talking about!! like i said i have a lot of sick music on my computer but there is always soooo much more out there. thats the best part about music. the number of artists is growing exponentially as good equipment gets cheaper and more accessible. i thought i knew a lot about hip hop but 1992 showed me a ton of stuff i had never heard before.

the problem with this band is not drum machines or incompetence or any of that silly shit.
the problem with this band is that they're 19 and seem to only have one idea. seriously fucking boring.
and really...that one idea isn't that great. they get by on atmosphere more than anything else.
I appreciate that their songwriting is frank and that they're not wearing animal costumes
or whatever else dumb shit dumb bands do to get by these days, but they're going to need to dig deeper musically for sure.
like a fashion model, it's stylish but very flat.

that said, I'd rather listen to this than...I don't know, Kings Of Leon or whatever other horrible shit we listen to because dumb girls like it.

another thought - I was telling a friend the other day that the American version of XX is Dutchess & The Duke.
I know they really sound nothing alike, but hey! boy/girl voices, limited sonic palette, somber tunes, it works!
on the other hand, Dutchess & The Duke have a (dark) sense of humor
and steal from Leonard Cohen, The Kinks, and The Stones instead of...The Human League, I guess?

so yeah, go check out She's The Dutchess, He's The Duke.

on the other hand, I don't think Dutchess & The Duke have hairstyles nearly as groovy as XX, so maybe this analogy is fucked.

i definitely get that it's not "cool" music and i'm sure their popularity is a big part of that but i like them as a band that i can enjoy and i can play in mixed (wifey, in-laws, ect...) company without anyone bitching for me to turn it down or off. i know that's not the number one priority on most peoples list but that combined with the human league throw back kind of makes it work out for me. but fuck me, i like phoenix too.

it is music that works, I'll give it that. it's probably the perfect music for light housework or lonely boners.
maybe it's John Tesh or Yanni for the moderately hip, I don't know.
that's not a knock against the moderately hip, btw, I can tolerate this group much more easily than the outrageously hip.
I just wish there was more music in it. More....something.

ha, bringing Yanni into this was probably unnecessary, I'll grant it. I'll keep my hands up.

Anyway, the bad part is that their early success is probably the worst thing that could happen to XX.
they now have zero outside incentive to dig deeper and create something more compelling.

this album came out in August 17, 2009 for fuck's sake. why are you guys having such deep/analytical conversations on a band who's not even groundbreaking or anything? i thought this band was alright at first when i heard about them last year, then my girlfriend got SUPER fucking into them. this to me falls into that MGMT/Hot Chip category: music girls are into and we can get into too, but the novelty fades after a while.  i honestly preferred jj's debut album compared to this. peep it if you haven't already:
