Those Eitel pieces reminded me a bit of Kevin Cyr's series of vans that I really love.

(Sorry for the huge pics)

I really like Matta's work.  He was a Chilean surrealist and when I was an undergrad, I worked in a museum that had his piece Je m'arche on permanent display.  I don't know why, but I really liked it from day one.  He was an more abstract surrealist than Dali or Matisse, but he still had defined images and figures in his works.  He was obsessed with Jung's "collective unconscious," so he was attempting to relay collective and essential human feelings and experiences while also analyzing things like the interaction between the mechanic and organic.

Here's a site with a lot of his art: http://www.matta-art.com/ .

I'm not the biggest fan of the extreme abstract expressionism work in Rothko's late period, I respect his philosophy behind them.  I prefer his earlier works, but I probably wouldn't call him a favorite.

And I actually really like Don Pendleton's work, both within and outside of skating.  My parents bought me an original painting of his for my college graduation.

OG:

Caravaggio is awesome, but Rembrandt's use of the Baroque style is also unfadeable:

Goya was pretty dark:

Cubism is a mindfuck. Braque Georges > Picasso

Van Gogh is blown out, but when you consider the effects of his epilepsy and absinthe abuse would have had on his sight, he was clearly tripping balls. I back it.

I dig Brett Whitely. He uses a nice dark blue in a lot of his paintings. Plus he is Australian. You can visit his studio in Sydney which is pretty rad. It displays a large body of his work and you can look through his records, books and other personal possessions.

Samuel Bak. http://www.facinghistory.org/illuminations

A holocaust survivor with a very unique way of portraying what happened to him and his family/friends through a paint brush. He is still alive and painting.
