Back in 1993 I skated with Andy all the time. I had this blue Honda Civic that was good on gas and we took it all around California to skate. He seriously destroyed every spot we ever went to. He was riding for Santa Cruz at the time when the "big pants, small wheels" lameness was really creeping in to the whole scene. For various reasons he was getting on the outs with Santa Cruz and serious rumors were percolating that he would soon be off the team--we surmised that one of the issues for this was the fact that he was not considered by the populous as being "fresh" enough for the times (whatever that means).
I came up with an idea that perhaps if Andy started wearing some baggy "goofey boy" style clothes people might consider him to be "fresh" and thus he might be able to retain his sponsorship with Santa Cruz. It was more of a mockery of the situation than anything else, but I digress. Nevertheless, much to my surprise, I was able to sell Andy on the whole idea so we went out and traded product for some lame tan and purple baggy raver gear. The amazing thing was how pumped he was throughout the whole escapade. "I'm gonna be fresh! I'm going to be marketable!!" he kept saying and it was cracking me up. So, sure enough he gets the gear, immediately puts it on, and the first place we go to is the NHS/Santa Cruz headquarters. He barges in to the corporate offices and starts going up to everyone "Hey! look at me, I'm Fresh... I'm marketable now!!". I think he even went in to Bob Denike's office "Hey look Bob, I'm fresh! etc..." The strange looks on everyone's faces and their stunned/startled reactions made the whole effort worth while.
After that we went out skating and filming in Santa Cruz. I shall provide some proof of this whole drill by submitting this Thrasher-Classics segment that has Andy documented in the "fresh" gear at 01:50 on the clip. One of the funniest days of my life..
Needless to say, he was off Santa Cruz and riding for Consolidated about 2 weeks later. Mission accomplished?
