Anyone had this problem?
« on: June 28, 2011, 05:28:12 PM »
I figured if i posted this here I would get more of a response than if I posted it in questions.  The last few weeks, my left foot (my pushing foot) has been giving me this pain under the back side of the ball of my big toe.  Yesterday it's gotten to where it's too painful to skate, does anyone have experience with something like this?

If it makes any difference, I'm wearing a pair of vans skate hi's, and have been skating alot more lately (I've had the last few weeks off work and have been having 6-9 hour sessions every day).

its because youre skating so long every day, and the insoles in your shoes probably arent that great. most of the time when i get that feeling its because the insoles are either really thin or kind of compacted and hard toward the toes

I have to tape my toes when I skate or I get inflammation in the joints from pushing. Good times.

One time I cut a tampon in half and taped it under my toe joint, it caused my toe to stay bent and kept it from flexing the "wrong" way.  You could do the same thing with a lot of different materials.  It will feel a little weird so tweak it here and there and it will work pretty good.  Especially when you're not skating.

I get the weirdest foot/ankle/knee pains from vulc shoes.

Eras look so sick, but skate like such shit in the long run.

yeah i get this when i skate for really long distances. you know just pushing and pushing forever. its a constant impact sort of like you're developing a blister. it sucks but i just switch stance and keep going.

I started getting this earlier this year, and now it happens every time I skate. It's generally sore for the next two days and dampens my desire to skate until it subsides. I thought about it maybe being a form of tendonitis and perhaps seeing a specialist. Feeling too young to have my first life-long nagging injury.

It could be a stress fracture.  You get them from repeated use and impact, so pretty much from skating.  It happened to my pushing foot but more on the top of my foot.  It's a pain in the ass, it hasn't really gotten much better in three years.  Ice it for sure, and try and stay off it for a while now.  I didn't stay off it and that is why it has never healed.
I actually did hit another skater in the face with my shoe once at a demo doing a shoes fly off kickflip but he was cool with it.

Toe fractures are common. Dealing with that shit now. Nothing you can do except buddy tape, ice, and stay off the board. Let that shit heal because if you don't, surgery awaits.

...could also be a bruise. At least for the bottom of the feet, you rarely see them (since they're closer to the bone) and anything can trigger those fuckers from going from a pain level of... let's say 3, to a 9 in a millisecond.

Microfractures or bruising though, definitely put your feet up and relax for a few days. Maybe an anti-inflammatory like Ibuprofen in the mix would help as well. Take care of those feet and don't be one of us old farts that didn't!

yea i think i have this too.
my research has told me that its turf toe.
so ive been taping it and icing it and tryna rest it as much as possible (even tho my dumbass insisted on cruising to class today)
but i was wondering does this have to do with the way i push or is it all the shoes fault?
like i think i do like an extended push in which my big toe is bent back for the duration of the push.
so should i start taking smaller less aggressive pushes?
I dont recall ever putting on anything Southpole in my life.

i broke my big toe a couple times over the past 12 years skating on my back foot (ollie and pushing foot) and its never really healed. driving a long way can even cause the pain. sometimes its just sore and other times it feels like the bone is just grinding out of place on the other and i cant even put pressure. the knuckle of my big toe (basically the top of the ball) is like 3 times the size of the flat knuckle on my left foot. from my experience theres not much you can do besides rest and ice. better shoes definitely help. its so weird though, i can be walking and step wrong and fucking cant skate for a month, or i can jump down a set of stairs for an hour and be fine. skateboarding finally takes its toll :(

Ouch! I was diagnosed with sesamoiditis two years ago and that shit took forever to heal. Wasn't supposed to skate for a long time but I still did mellow stuff and didn't push much. Still gives me problems sometimes.

I wish there were more shoes that weren't so pointed at the end, I hate the slight bunion-ing that most cause, but I don't think the two are that related.

It's aggravated by both the way you push and the shoes but it's more of just from skating and being on your feet a lot. The joints in your big toe that work as tiny knee-caps get inflamed and the more constantly it gets inflamed, the more it will continue to get inflamed because of worn out cartilage and such. Less force/less aggressive pushes will help but honestly I think a diet high in natural anti-inflammatory foods is probably the best thing you can do without sacrificing anything skate related.
