Gluten Intolerance Help/Info
« on: April 20, 2013, 09:32:52 PM »
Both of my parents are gluten intolerant and I have recently started showing symptoms of gluten intolerance. Is anyone else on here gluten intolerant? Can you offer any advice or information on how you manage it? Any help is appreciated.

My wife can't eat gluten and the first thing you need to do is get a simple blood test to see if your a celiac or just wheat or gluten intolerant. You need to stop eating all gluten and then start to add the things with only small amounts back in like soy sauce etc.. Then you'll find out what stuff you can tolerate and what you can't. The truly gluten free breads aren't very good but some of the boarder line products that some people are fine with like spelt are good. It's not that bad really my wife is meat, dairy, gluten, soy and sugar free and even that isn't that bad if you make your own food.

my mum is gluten intolerant, amongst other things.

find a good specialty shop that sells lots of gluten free products (ask your parents where they shop)

if you like bread, buy a bread maker and make your own gluten free bread, my Mums home made gluten free bread is really good.

otherwise just be careful what you eat and what vancanman said

Yeah my mum is a coeliac. I live in the UK and she gets free bread from through the local pharmacy (it actually tastes really good toasted, you gotta find the right brand though because some are shit), you might be able to get that too. It's long because you can't eat so many things, but you can get these handbooks that list brands and products that you can eat if you're not sure. It seems companies and restaurants are getting more and more aware of it though, so it's easier to live with.

My dad is celiac and my son has loads of allergies. The UK seems to be pretty good in mainstream shops at catering for "special needs". But first you need to get a blood test as your iron levels and a few others can be affected too.

inform the waiters at restaurants that you are gluten intolerant .

If you guys are making resorvations in advance , make sure you inform them about it , Will give them some time to adjust and if its a good place they might make you a special menu

I have a coeliac in the family. They get free gluten free flour at the pharmacy. I don't know what it's like in the States, though. Also, you can pretty much strike any fast food from your diet. Apart from that, there are loads of gluten free products available, nowadays. You should probably contact your local coeliac patient organization, I'm sure they can help you even if you don't suffer from the same thing.

But Morty, shouldn't your parents know best?

I've gone gluten free for bits at a time when I was feeling bloated and didn't find it too difficult. The only thing that would get to me I think is with eating out I'd be afraid some careless waiter would write off the fact I was gluten free.

Most gluten free breads I've had a pretty cardboard-y but once toasted turn out all right. I'd probably just start going for tortillas though as you can even find some gluten free ones that are quite good and health along with eating brown rice more often.

People might tell you that gluten free beer is horrible but some of them are actually quite decent - might not even be able to tell the difference if no one told you but they do feel a bit lighter. It basically limits your options to pale ale types though. Beer's basically what always end up breaking my gluten free diets because my favorites are witbiers and hefeweizens.

Of course we should create products that allow people who are gluten intolerant eat normal foods.
but maybe....

There are places like Waggamamas that have a seperate menu. But there are so many hidden things. You can have normal sized mars bars but not mini ones cos they put flour on the conveyer belt in the factory

its pretty easy to be gluten free now in the US. as far getting appropriate foods go, most chain grocery stores have at least a gluten free section with shitty cookies, breads, etc. I had ulcerative colitis a few years ago and had to do the gluten free thing before getting my large intestine removed, you used to have to make a trip to whole foods, trader joe's or some other hippy food conglomerate to cop some gluten free tortillas but I was in my local grocer a few weeks ago and they now have a gluten free aisle. assholes.

I figured out I was gluten intolerant about 4 years ago. You just have to get reeeeally good at label reading and learn what you can deal with and what you can't. As has been said, most decent stores will have gluten free stuff. Most storebought gf bread is passable toasted and quinoa pasta is fantastic. Get used to eating grains you aren't used to and just generally being more involved in putting together your diet. King Arthur makes some great mixes and flour blends that I use for baking. I've been doing it long enough now that all the little things are totally second nature so I'm probably forgetting a bunch of things so feel free to shoot me a message if you have any specific questions.

Also, you will get bummed out periodically so treat yourself sometimes to good gluten free snacks. Liz lovely makes dynamite gf cookies if you can find them.

I am gluten intolerant, my mom is Celiac, wheat never bothered me until I hit my 30's. I can tolerate soy sauce and things like that. Luckily in Sacramento we have a gluten free store, a gluten free bakery and many of the local restaurants cater to gluten free folks.

My daughter is allergic to gluten, nuts, and seafood.  My wife makes some rice based flours using the vitamixer along with scouring the internet for recipes.

I asked my mum and the brand of bread she gets is juvela. I can't imagine it being good for sandwhiches but I am a fiend for it toasted, used to beg my mum for it when I was a nipper. Just letting you know because it took her a while to find a brand she liked, i've tasted some others and they were unbearable

Gluten Free Pancakes:

Mix up 1 egg, 1 mushed up banana and some peanut butter and fry in some oil for 3 or 4 minutes on each side. put yoghurt, sugar and fruit on top.
