Injuries and coming back

Lets face it, im always going to suck at skating.

Ive Lost my depth perception a long time ago which is kinda crucial for skating, but Ive explained this before, so im not going into that again.

Anyways, im turning 32 in a few weeks and i still try to skate as much as possible.

A few months ago i rolled my ankle really bad. I tore my ligaments for the fourth time on my right ankle and to walk with a brace for 3 months. Its kind of ok right now...

Last week i went skating for the first time in 3 months. The only thing i could land was a silly 50-50 and a crappy switch flip ( i skate goofy)...

Tricks like kickflips, tre flips and back 50's didn't work at all, i was really scared to even try them. And tres didn't even come close.

How do you guys come back from injuries? Should i get slowly back into it? Its extremely frustrating...

Go to a physio and get some home exercises from him, don't skate until he gives you the go ahead. Buy some supportive cupsoles and stretch. Cruise and take it easy for a while, few ollies, 50's, whatever your confident with, if a trick hurts, don't do it for a few weeks. Busenitz ADV are the truth.

Once you hit a certain age when you know your body cant handle the impact and abuse of certain types of skating for instance stairs or handrails you should just enjoy simpler more less impact obstacles such as manny pads, curbs, tranny or even flat. Unless you are sponsored and are/trying to get paid top dollar for that i dont see the fun or reason to abuse your body like that. You get less hurt the more you stay closer to the ground and can still have fun with it. And as ive gotten older ive noticed stretching and using a foam roller is a must to have a confortable session now.

You're always gonna be rusty from an injury or hiatus you just gotta build yourself back up slowly & don't get frustrated you can't do all your go-to's immediatly. Think if it as relearning how to skate, and polish up on all your basics until you build your confidence back up. It will take some time, but it'll come back eventually if you put forth the effort. Regular stretching, good eating, wearing supportive footwear, and physical therapy are all very important, and the more diligently you carry out those things over a long period of time, the better your chances are of recovery. I remember some interview with Jerry Hsu talking about how Reynolds would almost literally obsess over eating right, stretching, exercise, etc. and obviously you see the results of that. Most professional athletes have been through some type of injury/rehab experience and they face the same issues so sometimes reading about their stories can be encouraging.

Everyone who has posted is on point. Stay positive. Stretch. Stretch more. Eat fruits and vegetables. Stay positive. Take skating slowly. There's nothing that will inhibit you from making a full recovery as long as you allow yourself time to properly heal. Your confidence will come back. In 2001 I dislocated my ankle and had surgery and all that screws and plate 'you'll never skate again' jazz. It took a really long time not to feel that injury. It's a part of getting older that injuries take longer to heal and you actually have to be considerate of what you eat and drink - beer causes inflammation in your joints. At this point I'm happy with what I can do. Skateboarding is the icing on the cake. Good luck. If you can definitely seek out physical therapy. I've never done it but I hear acupuncture works wonders.

Thanks all, i appreciate it.

Im going to slowly try and relearn back 50's and back tails tomorrow. Those always felt comfortable and arent too hard on the ankle...
Just skated around a little bit, but kickflips are impossible right now...

It's been mentioned before but it possible why your ankle sucks so bad now is there's tons of scar tissue built up in your ankle.  You gotta ram your thumb into the spot and massage it around until you cry....

You might use this opportunity to try to skate in a different way too....ie switch, transition....just pushing around....

I broke my ribs about 8 months ago. Major pain for a month. They felt better after about 8 weeks and I was finally able to skate, work out, etc.

I fell on them again about a month ago. It was bad but not quite as bad as the first time. Maybe bruised? After 3 weeks they felt pretty good. Last week I went skating, had a little slam - didn't seem bad - so I kept skating. The next day they hurt like shit. Since then and it's been very tender.

Bummed about having another no-skate summer...

I am bouncing back from being rear ended by a girl going 45 mph.  My back and neck are sore again after getting as close to normal as possible from injuries in the past.  If you want to keep skating, you will.  Like people on their death bed that come back from the brink, you have to will it.  You have to want it.  I'm doing a lot of stationary biking and weight lifting to be able to dork around on a rolling piece of wood.  If I didn't want to skate so much, I could give up.  At 40 years old, it would be reasonable to hang it up, but you know what, I'm not done.  I don't fucking care how much it hurts or what it takes.  I'm doing it.  Against better judgment, against all odds, I will persist.  It's what I've learned, and it's all I know.  I'm a stubborn fucker.  I'll live to a hundred with this mentality.  Hopefully, I can keep skating the whole time.

I broke a rib, knew it was broken and didn't see a doctor because I know there is nothing they can do about it so rested it but without pain meds. Two weeks later I had a terrible chest infection and went to the hospital where they told me that I had been breathing really shallow due to the pain of taking deep breaths and it had caused air to stay in my lungs and become stale causing the infection. Had I been wiser I would have gone to the doctor to get pain meds to help me breath easier. Bottom line is there is nothing you can do but wait for ribs to heal and make sure you're breathing correctly.

i twisted my right ankle with a fs bigspin at a gap 1 month ago, x ray indicated that there was nothing broken. The doctor told me  to put ice and rest , it was nothing very serious, in 2 weeks it should be good.
1 month later i still cant skate, hurts like hell when i land on my right foot, anyone with the same problem?
Some times i wonder about how many skaters realized they're gay watching Dylan Rieder videoparts...

Did you get checked out after the accident? I had a similar accident about 7 years ago and it didn't immediately hurt so bad, so I didn't go to the doctor about it. Now I have chronic serious back/neck pain. I went to the doctor about it a year or so ago, and they asked when I broke my back. I had no idea I had broken my back. Get. That. Shit. Checked. Out. Especially since you're 40.

Stay off it as much as possible, wait another month and if it still feels weird/painful get it checked. If you have insurance, take advantage and get an MRI. If none if this works then just rehab on your own.

I broke my forearm pretty badly back in May. two plates and all that jazz. Just rolled around for the first time today. Felt sssooooo good. Gonna leave it a while before any tricks, though. Good to be on board again. It was such a gnarly break it freaked me out. First break ever after 30 odd years of skating. Tbh I should have got back on sooner but it took a while for one of the bones to heal properly. Are there any other skaters with metal plates in their arm?

I pinched a nerve in my back before and it was horribly debilitating.

The best way to come back from any injury is slow rehabilitation.

The worst thing you can do is riddle yourself with anxiety about
when you're going to be able to do x,y and z again. Like immediately
going back out there as soon as you feel somewhat normal is not the
way to go about it.
