What did you guys do before big boards were in?!

Generally felt terrible about life and had a pre-mature mid-life crisis. Things are just great now, though, thanks!

4 or 5 washers?!? on each wheels? Impossible. You can get two on thunders/indys with skinny wheels and three easy on ace44s, but 4 or 5, what trucks are you riding?
[close]

I've got 3 inside and 1 outer on every wheel, i actually fucked up the other day rotating my wheels and missed one and added it to another wheel so i had 4 inside and 1 outer, took me about a week to notice it as well, but its certainly possible on my Indys
indys, and no washers on the outside, of course

edit :and yeah, five, and bearing spacers so i can lock them tight

So I've gone from riding 8.8's (dont ask) back to 8.5's & 8.25s (depends on shape/wheelbase as to which size) but I also went from skating Theeve 5.85's to Ace 44's (bit too skinny and were pretty rad except for constantly bending of them) to now riding 149's on 8.25's...

My questions is has anyone tried 159's on 8.25" decks ??? and can give me some sort of insight, I'm loving then new indy hollows, but 149's just don't feel as wide as the 5.85 theeves and i'm not sure if 159's are wider than 5.85?
[close]

This link that Xen posted has Dee Ostrander riding 159's on an 8.25 http://skateboarding.transworld.net/videos/ride-presented-active-dee-ostrander/

FYI - the theeve 5.85's have a 8.54 axle, 149's have an 8.5 axle and 169's have an 8.75 axle

[close]

Thank's for that breakdown steve, legend!
169's are actually 9.125 axle. The 159's are the 8.75 axle.

Skateboarded?
My first board some 15+ years ago was a 7.75. Had 1 7.625 in 2003, and after that I went to 8 and then to 8.25+.

Wait, people actually ride 8.5 boards? We're talking. about vert guys right?

why anyone would ride a 8.25 board with 139 is beyond me.
It's perfect, anything over 8 1/4 would be too much

You can still see the 139 axles and grind like smaller trucks, but with adequate width for street and tranny

Haha I was talking about the "twig" guys. From 94 til 2010 I was on 7.5 to 7.75 and ventures.  When I turned 30 I told myself to size up to an 8 and 139 indys. Now I'm on the 8.18-8.25 with 139s program. There was a year in there in the late 90s where I was on 58s but mostly hung around 50mm

I like how Tracer makes a whole thread to justify riding 139s. just ride whatever you want man. shit most of the time when people ask me what trucks i ride, i know they are dumb. they both have pros and cons. I think the newer generation ride now is going towards big trucks thats all. when i was younger it was 136s all day long, i never even saw 146s or couldn't even tell the difference.

I had accidentally bought a pair of 149s and I kind of went with them experimenting with board sizes as well. I rode them with every size from 8.125 to 8.5. The grinds certainly felt better. However I had two problems, flips needed an extra effort and my shitty local shop didnt always have boards > 8.2 . I kind of  got fed up and I went to 139s since then.

My choice the last 5 years is 8.2-8.35 boards with 139s Indies. I am like 1.95m tall and size 13 shoe.

I skate Thunder 149 on 8.25 but have used them on boards all the way down to 8.06. Worked great for me.

My only gripe is that I don't like the "new" Thunder 149II design with the increased height. The previous incarnation was a perfect mid height truck. Not too high, not too low. I know that probably sounds ridiculous, but whatever.

I can't stand 139's/147's. I've skated 149's for so long now, but I recently tried my 139's, and it sucked. Everytime I tried a frontside grind, I would just hit my wheel on the coping. My turning radius was off, and 50's on tranny felt terrible. I'll stick to my 149's.

Only pussies or people with small boards ride 139s. 8.25 and 149s are the way to go. My feeble groove is so large I can feeble with my eyes closed.

I rode 159s on an 8.5, it was fine, the exact feeling/ration as riding 149s on an 8.25; I only used it for bowl skating.

No idea how people ride frankenstein (or magic carpet) setups; I'd imagine that there would be significant wheel hangover unless you rock slim wheels. I'm looking at you heritage, with your 149s on an 8.125" ;P

Shit, i seen my homeboy smurf at the park yesterday, he had a 7.8 with 149 thunders. Lol
This has me cracking up, what exactly does Black Flag have to do with measuring your dick starting behind ya nuts?

Skateboarding is nothing but a game to find the right fits to appear like you're a proportional human being instead of a midget or a giant.

Ofcourse you can hang a feeble with a foot wide piece of metal. Try kickflipping out, b/s 180 out, shuv out with 149... You get the point? 149ers are useless for street tricks, especially in the park. Flying down hollywood high I understand why people want a bigger board, but casually skating doing manuals, rails, ledges, gaps, there's no point at all.

Skated 149's and 139's this weekend back to back.  My manuals were on point with the 149's and were twitchy and ugly with 139's.  I can see the advantage to both but I would give the manual advantage to wider stable trucks

Trevor Colden - 8.06 Deck, 149 trucks.

Nyjah Huston - 8.125 Deck, 149 Trucks

Bobby Worrest - 8.18 Deck, 149 Trucks

Chris Haslam - 8.25 Deck, 149 Trucks

Pretty sure all these dudes could easily to a shuv out of their feeble grinds

I was riding 8" trucks/8.125 this weekend, I can't hang, so I'm moving on up to 149s. I'd split the difference and go with ACE44s again but I'm digging venture/thunder turning of late.
