Languages help
« on: February 09, 2007, 02:36:15 AM »
Alright so I want to learn a new language, I've already got English and have a decent amount of French. I'm leaning towards Spanish or Portuguese. Anyone have any other suggestions for languages to learn?

Learn Japanese. I can teach you if you want, even though the best way is to listen to Japanese so that your ears get used to picking up the different sounds, and actually speaking with someone.

If you're interested though, ask me anything. I'd be glad to help.

Its just where you would like to visit, or what kind or work you might do.

With Spanish, you have more options with places to go I guess.

Japanese is easy. The Kanji is hard though.

Spanish would probably be the easiest for you to learn because you already know french. I can understand basic spanish on posters and shit because i know french.

spanish is easy to learn,  i had pretty good mastery of it after working with a mexican kitchen staff at a pizza place.  all you need is to know how to conjugate verbs, and practice.

portuguese and spanish are 70% the same, so if you get good at one you could easily pick up the other.  they are also both pretty related to french.

there is a big demand for people who speak chinese or arabic.

ha that's exactly the same thing to me my good teacher told me before he retired last year...weird

what's your ethnic background? it's always interesting to pick up some of that...I tried learning some irish gaelic a few years back and it was actually easier for me than spanish..that might just have been because I actually had some motivation for it but still..its always fun

You should do spanish.  Although it must be interesting to watch City of God's original version.

Hey Tonycoxhox, am I able to read japanese kanji properly, if I can read chinese hanzi?  I once got hold of a small japanese dictionary and looked up some words I already knew in chinese back then and found they couldn't be any more different. Like "trainstation" - jap. "eki (I think)" and chin. "huozhezhan". Those and a few others didn't have a single dot in common, sign-wise.
Thought you might know this...
