PS 8.25 shape
« on: May 12, 2017, 03:10:24 AM »
Friends of slap, I look to learn from the wisdom you possess:

I used to pretty much only skate the aforementioned PS six 8.25 shape with the big squares nose. However I've recently sized down board and trucks and now don't really ride anything over 8.125. I was wondering if anyone had a recommendation for an 8.125 or below with a similar shape. Thanks.

Look at some Quasi shapes they tend to lean towards what you're describing.

That's a reason why I tend to skate PS is they are pretty consistently shaped the same.....quasi, FA, are the easy ones...you just gotta watch because I think sometimes they us bb too.....

I skated an FTC board, OLDER alien and habitat stock....they were all pretty much the same board....WKND had the same shape too but I think they changed woodshops....

Element boards are the one I see that are more all over the map with shapes....

I get the vibe PS is too busy or can't handle the demand and so some people are switching over.....

or any other PS shapes. FA/Hockey has a good 8.18 shape that is super similar.

I like that 8.25 PS shape. setting up a Transportation Unit in that shape today, can't wait to skate it. I was skating an 8.25 917 made at BBS and couldn't deal with the steeper concave.

@Kitto - PS make an identical shape to the 8.25 you like, in 8.125 size. It's the identical shape nose to tail, just a hair slimmer.

Quasi and Alien Workshop rock that shape and are pstix. Some newer PlanB also have a more square nose (and a taper towards the tail like powell) and are also psstix, but not the shape we're all referencing, but its close! Check WKND, might have something you could ridemas they are squarish.

for the record, shapes have NOTHING to do with wood shop. what you like is wood laminate and mold. there's no such thing as a psstix shape. the default go-to shapes they use are things that worked for element or other big brands back in the day but every wood shop has hundreds of shapes on hand at any given time.

any current brand/pro is picking out shapes they want either based on established boards or drawing from their personal preferences.

that said, ps stix does have a very defining mold which is the old mid 00's alien concave w/ the really tall nose. i'm assuming that's the one you're talking about but again, it comes more from the concave and nose/tail upturn than the actual shape of the board.

OP asked "I used to pretty much only skate the aforementioned PS six 8.25 shape with the big squares nose."

He's asking about a SQUAREISH shaped nose, dude, nothing about concave or kick which is what you are talking about. Now you're right in saying that it probably wasn't a generic PS shape but an AWS or something, without knowing the brand it's hard to say.

Molds do not dictate board shape, the /shape cutting does.... ::)

As for specific woodshop shapes, ALL of them have their very own 'generic' shapes for you to pick from, for example:

http://www.pennswoodmfg.com/Decks.htm

This allows folks to just take an off the shelf deck and get them printed...say you wanted to start a board co and not do any CAD work to create your own shape, get them made, test, repeat, etc. I guarantee you schitt stix does as well.

The real question is does say Plan B go to prof. fuckinglabcoat and say, we need a square/full ish shape to compete with everyone else, can we just use the WKND one but tweak it? I'd love to know the own and dirty of it.

Pennswood is very smalltime and ppl buying boards off the shelf is statistically insignificant. ps won't necessarily give you another companys template but you can take any board to them and have it traced no problem. or you can just say "i want a fuller nose based off this shape" it's not as complicated as you think.

i appreciate your guarantee and all but i've actually personally worked on this process many times over the last ten years with no less than four different wood shops.
