Are there trucks that could work on both an 8" and 8.5" set up? I want to experiment with a couple of different deck widths but ideally don't want to buy multiple sets of trucks - I'm wondering if there are truck sizes or particular brands that people think could suit both? Or would this not be advised?

As a beginner the majority of my skating is cruising, but I'm interested in transition/skating parks - hence wanting a slightly wider deck.

Thanks for any help

not really.

an 8.25 axle (indy 144, thunder 148) would work on either... but it'll be narrow on an 8.5

Let me preface this post with the fact that I am slightly inebriated, very uneducated and I havent read any papers or done any research at all, or read your post really.

I always wondered if you have trucks slightly wider than your deck what is it good for?

Thunder 148s slot right between those two. They are ideal for an 8.25” deck, but you’ll be splitting the difference: a tiny bit wide for an 8” and just a wee bit too narrow for an 8.5” set up.
Just a thought.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me.  You think you got me?

You can ride 8.5” trucks on a 8” deck and you can ride 8” trucks on a 8.5” deck. Depends what you like and what wheels you have. Get a ruler and a tape measure and figure out exactly how big a .5” is, now cut that in half .25” on each side overhang or underhang. That being said .1 is a big deal to some people. I’m guessing you have small trucks get 144’s or 149 standards.

i got scared reading this and walked out of work to my car to see what size my thunders were and make sure they weren’t too narrow. I would never be able to stop thinking about it if that were the case but it’s not thank god.

Reynolds rides 139 trucks on a 8.5, I'm sure if you didn't notice by now it wouldn't make any difference.

I ride Indy 149’s and skate any where from 8.25- 8.5.  But I have gone as low as 8. Never had an issue.

I always wondered if you have trucks slightly wider than your deck what is it good for?

more stability, the lever of truck to center is longer than deck to center. so the trucks will feel harder even with the same bushings.

you can ride a lot of combinations when you adjust the kingpin nut a little depending on deck size.
(look at big air or some vert setups, i.e. 215 indys or ace 66 on 8.25-8.5 decks)

i like the stability of trucks that are just a tiny bit on the larger side and riding them loose. (159s on 8.5-8.62 i.e.)

44s should be good, for sure. on an 8.5 i'd just ride double speed washers on the inside.
