Nose and Tailslide with Thunders and big wheels?
« on: June 20, 2020, 08:48:45 PM »
I’ve never skated a set of thunders in my life, but I recently found a pair of Templeton’s for $30. I know thunders have a longer wheelbase based on the geometry, meaning the hanger is closer to the front of the baseplate. I skate 56MM wheels and I’m wondering how other it affects other who skate Thunders and a similar wheel size. Noseslides on curbs is a go-to trick for me and if I have to relearn it or it’s gonna be dramatically harder, I’ll be bummed af.

you're fine. switched to thunders recently and found out everyone here was exaggerating w the slide problems. i'm only riding slightly smaller wheels btw.

Seems like wheelbite would be the more immediate issue but I know people manage 56s on Thunders just fine. They’re not gonna stop you from doing sliding if you have some wax and a nice secure lock in.

People complaining on Thunders are likely doing baseplate slides, not nose/tail slides.

I’ve just switched to thunder 149 teams from ace 44. I gotta say, Thunder’s are awesome! I do a lot of bs tails and I thought the baseplate would be an issue but, I can hardly tell the difference, still slides great. You’ll be good.

Side note: the pinch is amazing too.

Forgot to mention: I ride 54mm conical fulls.

I like having my baseplates all scratched up, it makes me feel good about myself.

As long as you don’t suffer from the same mental illness I do, you should be good.

I've used 151 Thunders with all size wheels. I'm not much of a ledgetarian but my nose slides seem slightly hampered by Thunders so I tend to use harder smaller wheels when I set up these trucks. 54mm Classic 101s are fine but it is really not a significant issue.

It was nothing I worried about until I read the Slap Forum Truck Set up thread.

I can't ride em because the baseplate issue, but I guess that means I never really learned nose/tailslides correctly.

I would always get hate from my friends for overwaxing side of the ledge when riding Thunders. I just decided its easier to slide on baseplate than always be waxing shit.

I've ridden thunder 149s with 55mm with no issues nose and tailsliding.

Tyson must ride at least a 60mm and seems to do fine. I would say to make sure you get some slidey wheels. I do f4s and they rarely stick on slides.

I skate like total dog shit and still have scratched up my baseplates, so not sure about the complaints either. I was a Venture dude in the 90s, tried some Indys when I made my grand reappearnce on the skate scene 2 years ago, and quickly switched to Thunder town and have been here ever since. Love em. I love you, too.
