Ipath Ukraine 2008
« on: April 09, 2021, 04:28:58 PM »

I saw this shit and it brought me back to when it felt like skaters were traveling all the time (even the smaller companies) and exploring new spots and cities. Now I notice teams seem to all end up at the same spots.

I loved that video! Thank you! I am a big fan of Kenny Reed and Fred Gall.

Obviously because of covid teams travel less now. Before covid some teams and individuals definitely still searched out new places and spots to skate: Atlantic Drift and Michael Mackrodt come to mind. Most of the big teams today seem to have super high standarts for tricks so they don't want to spend a long time searching for a new spot. People don't talk much about competition in skating, but I feel getting good footage even in tour clips is even more competitive than it was ten years ago. Especially as an amature there is a huge pressure on you to perform on tour or it might be your last.

I just want to see more new and weird spots, though.

Cool! This clip inspired two friends and me to go on a trip there a year later. One of the most interesting experiences in my life. The few other „western“ travelers couldn’t believe that we went skating and were not looking for women there. That was embarrassing and disgusting to be honest. But the spots and the locals were extremely friendly.

I miss Jack Sabback. I know he retired but it would be cool to have him back on Traffic. Pro skating is so difference from when he left.

Sick. That last frontside flip, by Alfaro i think, and maybe also that marble park heaven before that; I strongly suspect that being in Donetsk. Before the rebellion i lived there for almost a year on a voluntering service. They also had a horrible skatepark with a pool. The locals were really cool - basically my only friends while there - and they were still stoked on Alfaro who did a 360 nosegrab transfer from the pool to the park. The opera was also a nice spot, tho nowadays probably all that shit is destroyed. Thanks for the memories and fuck the war.
