Skated there a couple times in 1997 and remember thinking that the spot was a lot smaller than I anticipated.

hell yeah! Those things are so awesome, i imagine a lot of people cant get up on em so they are kinda slept on for that reason. I need to get back there i think i could still get up for 5050!! theres so many of them randomly around. that ground is the best for flat!!! it is just really fun cruising down that street early in the morning. it really wasnt too busy, im pretty sure it was a weekday. that was the very first thing i did the morning after we landed (i got there the previous night at like 9pm kind of thing) you can find so many spots along there (i belive the street is just called The Embarcadero)

Looks like the ledges just got skatestopped again, but are still good to go for manuals and tricks over the blocks.

Do the pads actually serve a purpose? (Outside of skateboarding) you'd think with the amount of effort they have put in to skate stop them over the years someone would of figured out you could just completely remove them in a couple of hours.

It's a weird one. I presume skating brings a lot of tourism to SF. They would eventually see that and just allow them. Kinda like Barcelona

Architecture is rarely 100% utilitarian, especially when it comes to plazas and other public spaces. Maybe the pads are supposed to reflect a pier-like structure.

i would imagine aesthetics. just some fancy architecture like most good looking skatespots if i had to guess.

real question is does the concrete make this spot 'easier' considering there aren't wood planks containing dozens of other variables to mess with your head?

Honestly it's surprising that SF hasn't just ripped them out. America hates public spaces, and any place where people can gather in common and not participate in commerce is antithetical to Silicon Valley's conception of freedom. I wouldn't be surprised if, after someone de-knobs them, they just go nuclear and make the spot another version of Love Park or EMB, a "public" space with no place for the public.

For a city with parkland every 20 blocks and bike lanes out the wazoo - SF is really right wing about public space, and skateboarders are either children or real estate value-harshing vandals in the eyes of every politician who isn't a supervisor there. A spot like Pier 7 reboot or EMB or Skater Island running is probably the product of bureaucratic slowdown or at the very least apathy

The Embarcadero is a major pedestrian thoroughfare and many of the International Cruise ships dock right near pier 7. It's an amazing stretch to skate but also an major access for tourists.

Encouraging all heads in the bay to get their licks in now; City Hall is lurking SLAP & it just occurred to them that the 3 blocks serve no real purpose* and can/should be removed all together.

@EXTRA SPICY, I sure did enjoy our session there & I’d hate to think it was our last; we should try to meet up again on some early morn for a session before the crowds arrive. Besides, I’m pretty sure I’ve still got 5 or 6 other spots to take you to before that tour of the waterfront south, mission bay & dogpatch areas is completed.
Considering the “looming threat” to the spot (and ALL humanity, actually) we prolly oughta get to steppin’, on the soon tip. And by soon, naturally I mean, “about a month from now.” ;)

*No real purpose, that is, beyond serving as the sole bulwarks between this dimension & the three seperate Hells that exist, each beneath their own/respective, and securely capped portal. The elders of the old city knew of these holes, and had them sealed in an effort to reduce the pain & suffering in their young hamlet. As a result of being confined, putrified, then concentrated & distilled over the last (nearly) two centuries, the evil that exists in that realm is unlike any that humanity has yet experienced. Should these protective coverings be removed, exposing the Hells contained thereunder, all life on earth will cease to exist within a few short, but agonizingly painful hours.
No biggie.

I wanna play you in a game of SKATE for the right to continue talking shit on me.  You think you got me?
