Building a new set up
« on: August 21, 2022, 02:10:49 AM »
Hi, new here but been visiting  the forum and love it

About me: I am 29years 1,82m/78kg/shoes a 43-42EU or 9usa

I been skating for 2 year, mainly on skate parks
Have own diferent decks and wheels but currently useing this:
-FA 8 liaison deck w/ MOB grip(feeling the deck probably too small for me 8.0" x 31.66" 14")
-Thunders lights 147
-Splitfire 51mm 101d F4 Classics
-Bones swiss bearings
(Just get the YUTO HORIGOME - KINKAKU-JI 8.0 deck since is longer and little more wb so probably would fit better for me since i am 1,82m height, also a big yuto fan. Didn’t  skate it yet)

Well, the thing is that i want to build a set-up more for “everything”.. street, transition… maybe i would like to try a little bit of ramp..

Got something in mind but cant decide with the deck and wheels

For this i would like the deck to be FA/hockey because i like the squared nose-tails so:

Not sure if i should got for:
8.25" x 31.79"
14.12" Wheel Base.

Or:

8.38" x 31.75"
14.18" Wheel Base.

You guys think the little differences between  between deck length and wb would be more important than the deck size?

For the wheels i thought about:
Splitfire repeaters 54mm 99d f4 Classic Full since got some more riding surface than the regular classics.

Or

Splitfire OG classic 55mm 99d f4 (tested the 52 and love them)

Planing to use a 1/8raiser since the wheel sizes.. but seems like it’s impossible to get the thunders ones.. guess other brand will be okay. Does all they 1/8 texture is like gum or there others with plastic/rigidity feeling? Saw diferences between shockpads/raisers(new on this thing never tried any yet)

Rest of gear is:
-Thunder 148 hollow lights because already got them and like them
-bones bearings reds… where my first bearings and like them too
-1’ bolts
-MOB grip

Feel free to share what ever you like about any part of the post but mainly like the opinions about the decks and wheels options

Also heard that fa/hockey got two shapes
1s (fa) more concave and 2nd(hockey) kinda more mewol, thoughts?

Those decks wb still would be short for me? How important the wb is for street, ramp?

Feel free to suggest what ever, and sorry for my poor english in advance.

THANK YOU!

The 8.25 will probably be the right choice because going in wider might feel too big after skating 8. That .125 wider wheelbase makes all the difference for me, I just can’t do 14. The 54mm sounds like a good all around size for streets and transitions. The 55 could feel huge due to being even wider than the 54.
So, 8.25-148-54 sounds great. If you can’t find Thunder risers bones, Heroin, Shake Junt or any slotted riser will work. I personally don’t feel a need for risers on Thunder 148 with 54s (I’m actually riding a 55mm Conical on Thunder lights which is even lower), but a lot of other folks might disagree.

ya go with the 8.25, 8.38 will feel too much like an 8.5 and the trucks you have will feel better on the 8.25.

i've got the same shoe size as you but i'm a little taller (188cm) and what i feel most comfortable on are 8.38 boards with 14.25 wheelbases. i can also do 8.25s and i like 8.5s for some stuff but 8.38s are my favorite (as in if i had to choose one size for the rest of my life it would be that). however i believe that the wheelbase is the most important dimension and the both of shapes you picked should work well considering the difference in our height. if i were you i'd pick the 8.25 because it is a tiny bit longer in the kicks (which i believe will work well for your height) and it's closer to the board you're skating now, so you'll get used to it quicker.

Thats for replying guys!

I been skating 8' recently but already tested 8,25 before and liked, probably even more because i think that extra wider deck gives me a little bit confidence to land some tricks. Never tried wider decks than this but probably wont be too much

The point that scares me is... Recently i been skateing a FA 8' deck and have to say at turning-rideing it  didn't like at all, i think it was because the deck as i already stated feelt so small to me with also a short wb...(the squared shape and the poop was good for me) but i am scary to spend money and feel the same with the same brand but wider deck, dont think it would happend but makes me undecided to make the step.

The deck i got in mind is the HOCKEY BARNETT CBS 8.25" or 8.38"

Been doing numbers and compareing to my current 8' April deck (totally recommendable for the people that likes 8')
The 8.38 got the same wb, but the other one is really close, also the lenght of the decks are almost the same

Its just about the size and wb, probably will follow your tips and chose the 8.25'

Sorry guys but this technical things destrois my mind lol

More thougs?
