Removing paint from trucks
« on: January 03, 2022, 02:39:26 PM »
I got a deal on some colored Ace's recently and need to strip them down raw. Can someone with experience getting paint off trucks recommend the most efficient way? I'm seeing google results like aircraft stripper, pure acetone, or oven cleaner? Will those methods possibly weaken the strength of the aluminum or axles/kingpins from the chemical reaction? Or how bout sandpaper? Does it yield super scuffy and shitty raw looking aluminum? Any input appreciated.

Citrustrip. Take them apart, remove the bushings, washers, nuts, etc. and tape off the axles. Do a coat of citrustrip and let them sit for 24 hours. Everything should come off with a wire brush pretty easily.

I like citrustrip because you can do it inside, but do still wear gloves, a mask, safety glasses and all that.

Edit: here is a set of 44s I did that to. They were originally rally green, but I stripped them and repainted the plates black.

I co-sign the citrustrip, used that on a set of Shelby blue aces. Too off the hanger and left the base blue.

Paint came off extremely easy.

Yeah they'll be raw. If it's a clear anodizing then Oven Off works the best. Any anodizing on aluminum can be done this way

Sand blast cabinet if you don't want to deal with chemicals

Acetone didn't work for fuck on my black 2016 Independents. Soaked it for days and hit it aggressively with a wire brush and it barely took anything off. Now they just look atrocious so they're on the cruiser lol.

It will clean it pretty well though.

Only thing that worked on powder coated thunders for me was muriatic acid. Aircraft stripper did absolutely nothing when left in for about 24 hours.

Much appreciated you guys, citrustrip it is. What's the best way, just dump a bunch into a paint tray and then dip the brush in and apply to the trucks? @macho taildrop got a pick of the other sides of them? They look beautiful.

The ventures I’m currently skating were the Bobby Worrest ones. Got them cuz they were on sale. Bobby is rad, but that giant graphic on the back had to go, so I used some extra scraps of grip and sanded it off. Took a bit of work but it came off pretty decently. Only time I ever sanded anything off some trucks.

I've stripped tensor mags blue, green painted ones and those matt black ones
Also some old yellow n black ventures from years ago.

All of them I just used acetone some cloths and griptape

Some were easier than others

I just used a paint brush and brushed on a thick coat and left sit for 24 hours. Used shop rags to clear the goopy paint and then scotch pad for anything that didn't just wipe away.

I should have done that. I did let mine soak in a paint tray and it was overkill.

I stripped three pairs on the Tensor AGTs, which seem to have REALLY thick paint compared to Thunder and Ace.

Take apart trucks, remove pivot cups.
Coat with a stripper, allow the parts to sit overnight.
Gear up with long butyl rubber gloves and goggles, cover all your skin.
Use a bench vice to hold the truck parts.
Put a wire brush in the chuck of your impact wrench, go to town.

Takes ~20 mins total.

Yeah, at first it left a bit of a scuff mark that you could only really notice if you looked at the trucks up close, but after a week of skating and abuse the rest of the truck gets so scratched up and scuffed up that it’s not even noticeable anymore, at that point it just blends in.

Used citrus strip on some 139 stage 10s. Took 2 applications and used a steel wool kitchen sponge to rub off paint.
They aren't perfect but overall I'm really happy with the new look and I’m excited to size down to an 8.

After stripping, I usually use a clear gloss enamel (rustoleium); I don't get many tips due to the smell tho.

.

I know it is not quite the same thing, but also using steel wool - the sort of stuff people have to clean dishes, or in the workshop - was really good for cleaning up trucks as well, either old trucks that just needed a shine up or others with a little logo that needed coming off, as per this post.

Not the same as the whole Citri Strip product for taking the full coloured paint job back to raw metal, but using steel wool to rub down the hangers for a minute made some crusty looking trucks come up beautifully as well as what I did here.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

For lil graphics sandpaper/piece of gritape works well. Also works wonders for cleaning your oven if you're into that sort of thing.

I use steel wool on truck graphics and boards, comes off super easy.

Whatever Venture uses, specifically on those PRod gold ass plates...nothing strips it (and I've tried using the same stuff I've had great success with everything else).

Have raw ace 44 and it got dirty. Do you think nail polish remover can be good?

Not sure if I understood but if you want to just clean your hangers every solvent should work, soap & water too…

What grit of steel wool do you guys use to take graphics off a board or logos off trucks?

This was just the three pack in the supermarket cleaning area, so not really high tech stuff.

Guessing there are more substantial options, but this does the trick better than griptape offcuts and gets a cleaner almost polished finish.

I have done trucks but never tried on a deck, although I have stuck grip offcuts to a block for hand sanding or an electric sander which did a way better job.

I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

It's already been briefly mentioned here, but before you go out and start buying solvents make sure your trucks are actually painted and not anodized. If they're anodized you're gonna have to grab some grip scraps or the mechanical sanding option you most prefer and get to work.
