anyone good with wordpress?
« on: August 03, 2013, 07:37:12 PM »
Im trying to imbed from ISSUU onto a post on my blog, hosted by Wordpress, but despite seemingly person proof instructions on both ends I cant get it to work.

ISSUU is not on Wordpresses "whit list" of sites you can embed from but there is a specific option on there to get a code for tumblr/wordpress.

this is what im trying to embed...

http://issuu.com/mudozine/docs/issue_1

And this is the code that issuu is giving me...

<iframe width="525" height="340" src="//e.issuu.com/embed.html#8982712/4291006" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

This is just the HTML code you have to paste in the text view:

If you have no HTML/CSS experience use Blogger. Been using it since 2008 and it's great (although I do customize the hell out of mine).

Hey, guys, all this clickety clack, clickety clack just isn't my strong suit (yet) so I was wondering if anyone with any knowledge in website building could impart some jewels on me. We all have our strengths, but mine are more on the artistic side and less on the engineering/marketing side.

Here's the deal: I'm trying to get my website going.

I was able secure the domain name I wanted by registering it through GoDaddy. So now I have a ".com", plus I'm paying an extra $10 for "Full Domain Privacy and Protection" (protects domain against hijacking attempts, protects against accidental transfer, whatever that means).

I also subscribed to the website builder option offered by GoDaddy...and I feel this was a mistake.

Everything seems very cookie cutter and limited with their templates. I get that beginners often appreciate things that are super-easy but I am not one of those beginners. I am the sort of beginner who will jump into the deep end and learn to swim (i.e., learn about coding, html, all that) after a little help in the beginning. I see the writing on the wall as far as technical limitations here at GoDaddy and I want to jump ship. At least for the website building. I need flexibility.

The nail in the coffin came when I was informed by GoDaddy support that their website builder will not allow me to even imbed a basic animated gif.

So, I want out, baby.

My renewal period on GoDaddy is almost up, and I have not even published the site because why would I go live if my immediate goal is to get of GoDaddy's website builder? I have left my auto-renewal on my GoDaddy ".com" domain (I don't want to lose that) but my website builder will expire shortly. And I don't care about that. I never published my website so I have nothing to migrate.

I've looked around and decided that I want to be on wordpress.org (as opposed to wordpress.com). It sounds cheap, it sounds flexible and it sounds like you can do a lot with a little elbow grease. Plus, I heard the owner of GoDaddy is a piece of shit so fuck that guy.

Evidently, in order to switch to WordPress.org, I need to first "choose WordPress hosting". I would choose "shared WordPress hosting".

What's the difference between that and registering my domain with GoDaddy?

GoDaddy offers WordPress hosting. If GoDaddy's website builder was lacking, will their WordPress hosting suck as well? Why does their WordPress hosting feature "Domain"? Didn't I get that with my ".com" through GoDaddy?

What WordPress hosting do you use? Is Bluehost the way to go?

Any help or advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I would maybe just keep your domain and use whatever host you want. Go daddy is kinda like the TurboTax of web products and all those packages are usually just to upsell you stuff you don't need, as you've already correctly deduced. A domain is just a text pointer and it can point to whatever you want it to.

If you're dead set on WordPress there's a bunch of editors out there, maybe check a couple out and see which one you dig. They used seedprod on the last wp site I helped out on and seemed to like it. If you're not going to have like thousands of concurrent users or provoking ddos attacks then you can really host wherever you want, most modern servers should be able to handle a small to medium sized site without much hassle.

Alternatively, If you want something thats easy to use first and foremost then I would probably look at like weebly or wix or one of those CMS designed around drag and drop builders. They're not exactly super powerful but for a small site where you aren't going to be managing robust databases or having backend stuff to connect to they're easy to use and have some decent looking templates

I personally kinda like the integration of AWS for website development, they have everything you need to get up and running with whatever backend/CMS you choose and Amazon has server farms all the country that you can choose to host on. Also, it's popular enough you can find tutorials or support for everything pretty easily. I actually never checked to see if they have WordPress, but I have to assume they do or you can always install it yourself if you feel comfortable working with Linux style operating systems.

Not an expert or anything, just a dude who sometimes plays around and used to be a graphic designer. I was flirting with the idea of building an online thrift shop for used skate gear, but I decided to use Drupal because I was applying for a job that used it for one of their sites and that turned out to be a terrible choice and massive headache and I got to around 30% done and just said fuck it this isn't worth the effort. If I ever decide to do it again I'll probably use WP or shopify or something like that
