I always wondered what the deal was with that monument/fountain. It reminds me of some brutalist era monument you’d find in Soviet countries. Super ugly and
Depressing.

Atleast the skating that took place at EMB made up for the hellscape-esque backdrop of the fountain, now with what I’m assuming is pickleball courts dropped haphazardly infront of it it has reached peak eyesore levels.
Do you get deja vu, huh?

Pickleball is wack as fuck for sure but those are temporary, I wouldn't worry about it, they put shit like that in EMB like once a year or every couple years, usually it's an ice skating rink though. Also, most of the shit there like the ledges and the 3 and 7 stairs are definitely still skateable except for the small side of the fountain perimeter, so I feel like the city did it a bit more respectfully this time around in comparison to times in the past.

Op, you ok man? Being real here, you doin alright?

For sure. That's the reasonable take. It looks temporary also in construction.

It made me think of that Leo Valls interview with the Mostly Skateboarding podcast.
http://www.mostlyskateboarding.net/2023/11/brutalista-skate-urbanism-and-more-with.html
it's cool he's involved with incorporating skateboarding into central areas within cities, but he mentions the challenge of getting one place sanctioned at the cost of losing somewhere else nearby. It's interesting, the relationship of skateboarding and urban planning and someone like Leo doing something about it.

nothing's been the since same

Like the time they filled it with sand and made it a volleyball courts.
Look’s temporary but if enough suits start bitching about people skating, you know, money talks. Bye bye EMB.

Friend of mine told me about this but I hadn’t seen it myself

The city gives you a designated place to skate and be contained for political reasons then takes away a place we want to skate. Not a good look for the skaters that were buddy buddy with cops and politicians. Look at this crap
this photo actually makes ducky's cover drop even more insane. holy shit that's high, and steep, very high and very steep

That was sick, I also work in construction and have a love when there is attention to detail.

Ledges still got a little life in it but maybe a rebuild in the future. I feel like it’s still serving its purpose as a valid street spot at the moment. park/plaza would be cool but emb would also lose a little bit of that downtown magic.

truly weird times when you have skateboarders working with the system to create skate parks, especially for the United Nations. this is like the equivalent of building a skate park in Nazi Germany.

1) With the exceptions of DIYs, skateboarders have always worked with "the system" to create skate parks. How do you think skateparks get built?
2) UN Plaza is a public park belonging to the City of San Francisco and marks the founding of the United Nations at a spot nearby
3) The UN does not in any way whatsoever equate to Nazi Germany
