RIP Joe Fong

Joe was a true legend of San Francisco skateboarding. From some of the first “real” skate photos from SF, to early Independent truck testing, to being an “older brother” to the likes of TG, Bryce Kanights, Shrewgy, etc; and an outrageously positive supporter of skateboarding.

I am surprised (and bummed) I’d never heard of Joe until now because he was clearly deep in the culture! And he was ahead on his support for women in skateboarding.. fuckin dope!

I’m really fond of the early skate photos.. this is so good:

Sounds like a cool person.

Thank you sharing and peace to his family and friends

Man. I didn’t even see this. Wish there was no RIP section but I understand why it was created.

Ironically I knew Joe. Met him in 2017. I was talking photos at some skate event in Oakland. He approached me and we chatted. I wanted to continue to shoot photos so I asked his name and he says Joe Fong and I was shocked since we had the same last name. He told me his brief history in skating but I am so bad with that generation of skaters. I left the event and he went to his car and gave me a free Independent Trucks shirt. We connected through the years and he actually got me into the SOTY parties. I actually saw him last year at Miles SOTY party. From what I know now, he was diagnosed with cancer last year and it took his life in less than a year.

Every time I talked to him, he would always talk about his kids and how proud he is of them. Just a super cool guy and boy did he love skateboarding. We lost a really cool guy. RIP Joe.
