Well first think about where it's going to be used and whether you'll need to transport it - if you are going to put it in a vehicle then plan its dimensions accordingly; if you are going to carry the thing anywhere then think about weight and incorporate carry handles or some other way of being able to grip it - though I've seen some put wheels on one end so you can tip it up and wheel it about

For a straight wood box, the key is the ribs - have these crossing the structure at regular intervals (so you don;t make the gaps between them too week): top and bottom should be basically wooden frames (rectangle) with ribs crossing them. Then fix them together with vertical spars, box in the sides and you're away.

It's not much more difficult to make an up-box or triangle box etc - it's all just playing with angles :)

Oh make sure the bottom is even, to avoid wobbles etc..

Coping is straighforward; good wide angle iron (the narrow stuff can catch your wheels) is the stuff to go for - with some metals of course being softer than others (so avoid the softer ones, they won't grind as well)

Then weatherproof / paint if needed

If you're talking about something more permanent, it's time to play with concrete: this is still easy, the tricky bit will be making the mould (shuttering) - but you'll have to finish it where you're planning to keep it as that won;t really be portable

Feel free to come back with any specifics if this doesn't work for you
