Well considering how I like Ernie, I really didn't like that.

The video wants to be artsy, but is really just boring because of the terrible cinematography.

I don't blame Ernie, I blame Ambiguous.

I will not deny that he is good at skateboarding, but I never really understood how anyone could really be psyched on Ernie Torres. He has a rather bland trick selection, a style that makes me feel like I am the one that is about to fall over, and tragic, kicked-to-the-side, barrel-rolling nollie flips. Also, for some reason, I mark the addition of him to the Real team as the beginning of Real's disappointing shift in the whole aesthetic of their company. Some of their recent graphics are so corny/cartoony, they are seriously one step away from some World Industries shit. At the rate they're going, I would not be surprised if, in a couple years, all of their boards feature a cartoon skateboard character named "Woodie" performing all types of wacky antics. Here is a poorly drawn sketch of what I imagine Woodie's premiere double page ad is gonna look like. The end is near.

Please tell me why I am wrong, seriously, I am interested. Although I firmly stand by my opinion of both Ernie Torres and Real Skateboards, I would really like to hear what people find so compelling about Ernie Torres' skateboarding. Because I see little more than a person of very short stature skating average spots, doing all the latest hot tricks of the day with below average style. Yes, he is very good at skateboarding, and no, I do not see anything exceptional about that. However, if Ernie Torres is your favorite skateboarder than awesome, you are certainly entitled to your own opinion. Please, feel free to buy all of his pro models and watch all of his video parts, just tell me why he is so awesome because I just don't see it.

Also, Real is no doubt a rad company. The Actions Realized shit they do and giving all those kids those Christmas boards is very cool. But if you are going to try to argue that the art direction at Real has not drastically changed for the worse, than you must be, you have to be blind.

P.S. Insulting my ad was just plain rude, I spent a lot of time on that. :-[

In addendum, I suppose that the changing art direction of Real is merely a sign of the times, and it is in no way limited to the (I'm assuming) good people at Real. It is also reflected in the graphics of Anti-Hero (cartoon eagles chugging beer?), Alien Workshop (all those Rob & Big graphics), and probably every other big company that still makes money. There is a lot more money in skateboarding nowadays and that money rests firmly in the palms of parents, and they will only give that money to the company that makes the products that will produce the biggest smiles on the chocolate-covered faces of their kids. I suppose Chris Cole had very good point in that one interview recently. Companies probably shouldn't make graphics that appeal to me and my demographic if they want to make money because I sure as hell am not buying pro model decks. It just makes me sad that they feel the need to make cheesy rip-off graphics and cartoony logo graphics with blazing colors.

Part of this is very true.  The quality of graphics has declined steadily since the early 90's.  20 years ago when a pro model came out, it was out for a lot longer and companies didn't have to mass produce a whole new line of graphics every 3-4 months.  This saturates the market with designs that aren't given that same type of effort.

But, I've always liked Real and all of Deluxe.  Also, I liked the eagle chugging beer, the eagle puking on the beer, the gay consolidated unicorn graphic, all of Rogers silly graphics.  I think Girl and Chocolate do the best job of mass producing graphics that are usually strong in color design and overall aesthetics.

I like Real and I think they're one of the few good companies left, but I do have to agree that sometimes there graphics are a little corny. I'll still continue to buy them though as long as they support skating.

I think it's genius. You could just poach footage of guys who aren't on your company and say "well, he doesn't ride for us". You could strike deals with guys who are in between clothing sponsors and make it seem like you have this amazing ever expanding team. I'm surprised nobody thought of it earlier. Oh, and I still have no idea what WE clothing actually specialize in. I picked up a WE catalogue and had no idea what the fuck it was advertising. It had interviews with artists and slogans like "THE SUPER CONSPIRACY". At least Ambiguous have moved on from that obtuse shit.
