I've read this exact same discussion about the term soccer vs football about a thousand times.  Fuck you pman for making me read it again.

NFL would be more watchable if I didn't have to sit through a Beyonce concert, a hundred or so commercials for Doritos and Bud Light, and have to listen to any NFL commentator ever.  The amount of time that the ball is actually in play (not in a huddle or some shit) for the 3 hour block of TV has got to be close to 30 minutes.  In all seriousness, if American football was so great why does it have so much trouble gaining popularity outside of the USA.  Basketball and Baseball seem to have caught on.

Seriously?

Respect for the NFL.  It's a man's game and it hasn't "caught on" because it's a US game.  It's ours.  NFL fans couldn't care less if other countries like it.

NFL is as boring as baseball and cricket to watch... rugby is much more exciting (and i dont particularly like rugby) aussie rules is way better and football (soccer) is too

its not unlikely that england may get an NFL team in the coming years. they play one game a year over there and it sells out quick (and its usually shit teams). just saying, not trying to argue whether or not anyone outside the US likes football (hand-egg). i fully agree with chockfullofthat, it would be 1000x more watchable without so many commercials. but to counter that, you gotta get the redzone channel which jumps between all games being played. very few commercials. dorritos are good tho.

it's fucking called football

I feel ya man.  Some people call my favorite sport "Horseshoes" but I call it "Put a Dent In The Skull of Someone You Hate and Make It Look Like An Accident".  I might just go back to lawn darts.

When I went to Cuba recently I watched a lot of Gol TV (a soccer driven spanish speaking sports channel) in the hotel room, and there seemed to be a lot of promos on for NFL games. I don't know if that signifies a jump in popularity in Latin America or just an attempt by sports marketers to drum up enthusiasm. I think the appeal of muscular ubermenschen in leotards crashing into each other at high speeds is potentially pretty universal but the relative popularity of different sports is mainly a cultural thing.

I hesitate to say any sport is "better" than another because I find from personal experience that even sports that seem boring and pointless at first become much more enjoyable as you learn more about the rules of the game and the narratives it is structured around. The one criticism I have for all almost all North American sports, however, is the huge amount of time spent on commercial breaks, timeouts etc. which I think does make them objectively less watchable unless you've been culturally conditioned to enjoy/tolerate the commercialized spectacle of it all (see: Americans' obsession with superbowl commercials).

Aussie rules is prob the closet to a sport I like. Don't really get the appeal of any of it though.
