Vans Van Doren Invitational 2014

Holy shit! Can't believe there is no topic about this. Who watched the live feed? I was there. It was some of the craziest skating I've ever seen. A 16 year old kid named Alex Sorgente won it. I don't know who he is and he only has corny ass videos on youtube, but he killed it hard. Adam Hopkins killed it, Brad McClain was next level and Ben Raybourn looks like he can do anything whenever he wants to.

Crazy, that kid Alex Sorgente won the Mystic Cup this year too. Never heard of him before hearing he won two big contests today

Jerry Gurney was the best dude to watch. He was out there having a blast and ripping at the same time.
I always dug that dude before, but now I'm a fan.
And Cody Lockwood got ripped off. He had some crazy/technical tricks and amazing lines.

It's hard to judge just from the clips but looks to me like McClain should've taken the top spot, with Raven solid in the #2 spot. Alex Sorgente killed it but with his footage being broken into 2 clips I don't feel like I know what his full final run looked like. Either way McClain got in so many tricks with good variety and unstoppable flow.

Qualifiers- Some good stuff here. Sluggo busted out the backflip to fakie on cement w/no helmet.

I watched a bunch of this, and I cannot figure out how Raven did not win this thing.

sick skating, i just wish vans would stop masquerading around as a skateboard company and name their competitions something like "the annual boat shoe maybelline invitational".  i feel bad for you poor suckers who buy their shoes only to have holes in the sole and sides 3 days later and a sore lower back.

Layback beerchug was definitely a highlight of the day.

Also I hope Raney is ok. What a fucking maniac.

Edit: They gave him all the cash for that attempt, so he essentially won the best trick with a slam. Gnarly.

Wait. This coming from a guy who just yesterday wrote a paragraph based around this statement (direct quote): "Nike is great for skateboarding" then goes on to attack brands that were built around skateboarding. The jist being that Nike putting some money into skateboarding gives them a free pass as a non-skate focused brand infiltrating a potentially profitable market.

I'm not making an argument either way, I own, have owned, and at some point will buy both Vans and Nike SB in the future, and there's grounds to criticize both companies, but your blatantly conflicting rhetoric is mind-boggling. Either your loyalty to the swoosh is so deep that you're blind to reality or you just get off on seeking out opportunities to anonymously insult people on the internet so much that you don't care if there's any credibility to the garbage you shit out of your mouth.

And "boat shoes," are you serious? Have you looked at braata, team edition, Janoski, etc? Better yet, the Nike Post Harbour?

At the end of the day, they're shoes. You can buy them or you can choose not to for whatever reason but its more respectable to admit that you do something that goes against your ideals than it is to find bullshit excuses to justify your hypocrisy.

What was the top 10 and which Nolan are people talking about? If it was Nolan Johnson, anyone have video of his run?

Little known fact, the Canadian go-to trick is layback beer chug. Also the transfer Raney tried was suicidal. I went up to it and look across both sides. You couldn't even see the tranny for more then most of the gap.
