i hope this is the future of skateboarding in cities.  it seems councilmen are starting to understand that a single fenced in mega-complex on the edge of the city is not best way to handle the skateboarding "problem."

a series smaller plazas spread throughout the city and conceding existing infrastructure with no practical purpose is more efficient on every level. nice work MTL.

Mixed use plazas or unplanned urban spaces are rad. There is a pretty cool book called 'accidental playground' that talks about the old DIY spots on williamsburgs waterfront before it got all gentrified in the early 2000s.

One the reasons it was such an interesting area to hang out was b/c it was unplanned and random people would come together - rather than just skateboarders. That's kinda the point of cities if you think about it... to bring people together.

The problem is for the most part cities and politicians have no desire to bring people together, they only have desire to bring commerce to the city especially the downtown areas. Almost any park in downtown new orleans the cops will show up and shut down any large congregation of people if they aren't a group of middle to upperclass white people.

Montreal is such a rad city.  They don't seem to stress as much about the little things in life.  First the moved the Big-O which was an insane amount of work to do, and now they legalized a spot.

Here's a cool video about the Big-O getting moved.  Marc Tyson and Barry Walsh had a lot to do with saving the spot.

Wow they actually used footage of dudes shredding rather than the news outlet standard of a few bails and kick turns. Plus I heard you have a new plane arium

montreal seems like one of the most progressive skate friendly cities in the world. hopefully one day more cities take notice and free up spots in addition to whatever skateparks there are. that's wishful thinking, but still

i said one of, not the definitive skate friendly city
there are cities like nyc that didn't have a single regular ledge at any of their parks, and a few hours montreal is giving up a natural street spot
