Half Cab tongues puffier than usual
« on: September 12, 2024, 09:54:59 AM »
Has anyone ever noticed inconsistent padding in the tongues for Half Cabs lately? Not the '92s just the regular HCs. Talking about recent pairs too - not Half Cabs in the 90s VS now or anything. I have a few pairs currently and noticed that one of them didn't feel right and it's the tongue on it being way puffier than the others.

I have a lot of Half Cabs, prefer to skate in all the Classic versions (that I DIY into pro versions anyway), but also some Pro from various times and also some of the new Skate range, regular and 92 versions.

The fit and feel between different versions, or even what is supposed to be the same shoe from different runs or different years is significant, to say the least.

Compared to other classic versions of shoes, like Sk8 low, or Old Skool that I also have a lot of from various eras, which have far fewer changes to their line, the Half Cab has definitely had a lot of small but noticeable changes, including the tongue thickness, or even width, but also as the shoes wear, in some the tongue foam compresses down to almost nothing, others it stays thick and firm.

With all of this, I put down to cutting costs and changes in materials, especially in recent years where things seem to be lacking in quality controls that the shoes used to have.

I guess I am used to it now and just go along with it, wear them, skate them, destroy them and move on to the next pair soon enough, even though I more often than not never wear them to death and keep a lot of well used shoes around to put on for whatever other needs, yard work, going to the shops, etc.  Anything that doesn't fit well, I more often than not put away or pass on to others, but if that is your only pair, I can see how it could be a real pain for you.

Gone since 1988.  I talk too much about skateboards.  Sorry.

I have 2 new pairs and the tongues are about the same as every other pair of regular SKATE Half Cabs I have had over the last few years.

I have always skated half cabs. I just stumbled upon a picture of me from like 17 years ago and I’m wearing Levi’s, half cabs and a Barcelona jersey I got from the thrift shop. I would skate them often but then mix it up a lot more and come back to half cabs.

I have only skated the skate half cabs since they came out. Shortly before that I got the first white color way of Tiagos that dropped that were a homage to guy’s axion shoe colorway. They skated good but I really couldn’t pull them off so after like 2 days I just ended up buying some classic half cabs which felt like home and made me feel like I could skate better. When skating classic half cabs I got offered a free pair of the skate ones. I was initially apprehensive about trying the new skate model because I wasn’t a fan really of the pros and I felt the classics were perfect. I put them on, did a kickflip and was in love. They’re like classics just more supportive which is nice. Since then I have skated a ton of pairs regular skate half cabs and the 92s.

The tongues have varied a little bit but for the most part the 92 half cab tongues were all the same and all the regular half cab tongues were the same.

The 92 half cabs skated the best for me and have the best tongue. Puffier the better. That being said pretty much all of the half cabs felt more or less the same. If I could buy another pair of the taupe 30th anniversary 92 skate half cabs I would. Same with the dick rizzo chive one’s.

I’m skating the 18 east half cabs right now and I’m really liking them. They do feel a little different than the other skate half cabs but that was Antonio’s whole goal with those. They have the insole stitched in like the classic half cabs but it’s the skate insole. The tongue is puffy but a different puffy.

I just got a more recent pair of the skate half cabs that are just the original black colorway with white stitching and they don’t feel the same as my other skate half cabs. I’ve skated in this exact pair before but these feel different. It’s very odd. They're uncomfortable on the top of my foot just before the tongue. I’ve worn them a bit but they still are just sort of like that. Not the end of the world - I’ll still skate them but I wonder if all newer ones will feel like this or I got a dud. I’ll still keep buying half cabs. The tongue is little less puffy than the other skate half cabs.

Please keep making half cabs. Please keep making half cabs with black tongues. One solid color for the shoe and a black tongue with white laces. All earth tones with a black tongue and white laces are greatly appreciated.

I only got 2 pairs of Skate Half Cabs since the Skate line got introduced.
The first pair was lovely, bulkier than the 10 pairs of Half Cab Pros I had at first but also more conformable in the long term. It lasted forever and was really good to skate in once it was broken in. Only wore my second pair to work so far and started skating a pair of Skate SK8 Mids today so I suppose I'll skate that second pair in a couple months. Seems like the other pair I got so far.

I really wish that Dick Rizzo colourway would have been available here in Europe.  :-\

I'll second what Palin said, all earth tones work so well with Half Cabs. Remember those lizard green Pros (or whatever they were called)? Had 2 pairs, loved them.

Man was just thinking about this came to slap to see if it’s been talked about and bam here’s the post. I have a pair of half cab pros skated them a couple times and they’re fine. I can’t wear them casually tho, I think it’s my arch and heel that they hurt when I walk around in them all day. I guess it could be due to a puffier tounge. Someone said to loosen up the laces but then my feet feel like they slide around in them.

I had the exact same issue in some 92s I have in rotation. I had to swop out the pop cush for thinner insoles and really break the shoes in for them to stop killing my feet. Great now.

I was going to switch em out but I was at my kids sports event all day, loosening up the laces and taking them down a hole actually made them finally feel good for the first time since I’ve had em which has actually been about a year

Some old and worn Old Dirty Bastard Footprint Game Changers. Don't judge me... I got them years ago... I usually like Pop Cush in Vans and if I ever switch I use the Remind Medics... but ODB influenced me...

@Bristol_Palin I skate the skate classic half cabs a lot too and have noticed the pairs I bought this year also hurt the top of my foot right under where the tongue extends past the laces. After they're really broken in it stops, but that takes some weeks of hard skating.

Minor inconvenience but frustrating because the shoes are absolutely perfect otherwise (assuming you don't get the sole separation happening when they're skated hard).

Thank you man. I thought I was just turning into a complainer. I thought something changed.

Gonna try skating in them after cutting half of the tongue padding out with a razor blade

Can confirm, I've had 10+ pairs of the Skate Cabs since they dropped nearly 4 years ago. Last time I tried wearing the olive/black and black/marshmallow colorways, I noticed the tongues on them are significantly puffier than my black/white or navy/white 30th anniversary ones. Like puffy to the point of not being able to tighten them enough. I'm assuming it comes down to the shoes being made in different factories

The tongues did get puffier but they get better with time, just wear those Half Cabs at work for 2 or 3 weeks before skating them and you should be ok. I wonder why Vans keep on putting laces that are always too short in them though. So annoying.

I’ve got no problems with the puffier tongues but has anyone noticed a floppy / larger fit in the toe? The last 3 pairs I’ve had I can barely skate in(navy/grey/orange, pig suede tan/black gum and green/brown/white)

I recall people saying the materials overall in Vans shoes have been going down hill somewhat, so there could be that.

Even from some of the older Classic Half Cabs, which just feel so much thicker all over, the upper, the sole, etc, compared to the newer ones which are all so thin feeling and the suede only seems half as thick, which could then result in more shoes feeling like they lose that stiffness or never even have it to begin with.

The brown Nick Michel shoes recently were super tough feeling and were a little small for the size, compared to three or four others I had seen or tried in different colours, but I didn't buy any of them, just tried them all on for size comparisons.

Can confirm. They were like rocks for a while and definitely fit a bit small. They looked great, though.
