Sydney - need help!
« on: May 31, 2016, 07:16:58 AM »
Dear Slap and Sydneysiders!

I'm European and going to study at the Macquarie University from about mid-July till December this year (arriving a bit earlier, leaving a bit later).
Since I've never been there yet, I don't know anything about the cool places there.
Right now I'm looking for an affordable room somewhere between the Macquarie University, which seems to be located in the suburbs, and downtown/the nice beaches. Good transport connections are highly appreciated, so I can move my ass around quickly between university, inner city and the beach.
Which districts should I be looking for? What's the best way/website to organize a room?

What's the skate scene like and where is the main part of it located?

Thanks a lot in advance and have a slow day  :)

Hello louie the taurus, Macquarie University is quite far away from the city and the beaches, but the public transport to and from the University is pretty good (As far as Sydney's shitty transport system is). It's going to be pretty shitty beach weather for a large amount of your stay which sucks.

If you're looking for popular places near the city and public transport, Inner-West suburbs such as Newtown and Marrickville are nice. If you're willing to pay a little more money then Surrey Hills, Redfern and Pott's Point are even better. Epping and Ryde are closer to Macquarie University and are generally cheaper, but aside from the university they're boring places to be.

I've never used the site before but flatmates.com is one of the most popular ways to organise rooms.

I have nothing to compare it to, but the skate scene is good. Waterloo skatepark is the most popular skatepark in the city. On the weekends most people can be found in the CBD. It's the same deal as anywhere else really. There are nice skaters and then there are dicks. I'm a dick. Fuck you Louie you cunt

Yeah fuck me, right?  8)

Thanks a lot for the info!
Shitty beach weather does suck, but as long as it doesn't equal shitty skate weather, I will be fine.

Hmm, I was hoping to find a nice place "in the middle" between macquarie and where things are busy, so I only need about half the time for each direction.

Are you out skating a lot? Would be great to get to know some locals!

Yeah the beach weather will be shitty but around November it will probably start getting better again so you'll still get some time for swimming.

As for places "in the middle" i'm not too sure man, I've only been up here in the one area for 4 years so I don't know much of the surrounding suburbs. But via public transport, macquarie university is still under an hour away from the dead middle of the city so it's not too far away. I'm probably not the best guy to ask about that, but Leichhart and Balmain are two suburbs off the top of my head that people seem to enjoy

And yeah i'm in the city every weekend, G Raham has been known to make appearances himself. Hit me up on instagram or someshit and we can shred and hi 5 . @mercedesecorby

Your Sydney trip will not be complete until you hit up G raham and ask him to do a nollie flip. Best attraction you will see in the city.

Sydney is a great city to skate.  Best in Australia by far.  Great financial district tons of smooth ground.  For spots Russell Crowe Park, Waterloo Skatepark, Martins Place, I don't know the local name but those brick banks in fully flared are epic!  D M if you want a map with spots I have one from my trip.
