I'm trying to get through this movie and I'm not sure I can do it.

Everything feels super forced and "edgy." It is like, "Look, I know about skateboarding and my film is soooooo independent. OMG wasn't Juno was such a good movie?"

However, it is a million times better than Street Dreams but not nearly as good as Gleaming the Cube.

Edit:

Why the fuck would a high school girl be making out with this little kid?

Why the fuck is the shop sponsored kid who is in high school hanging out with this little kid who doesn't know how to ollie?

Why the fuck are all of the kids (other than Nakel) stoked as hell on going nowhere. We couldn't make more stereotypical skaters?

I got like 10 minutes into this movie and had to turn it off. It wasn't terrible or anything, just boring af.

Making $9.3 million on a $1.7 million budget seems like a nice return on investment to me.
I thought it wasnt just him solo, shouldve stuck with my og thought.

Im sure their SAG minimums are covered in the $1.7M budget.   And no, that’s not a real good ROI for actual film financiers (but it would be if he crowd funded).  Consider the budget is an optimistic number, plus tack on 50% of the budget cost to go towards Prints (what you send to each theater to play the movie) and advertising.   Then comes the “waterfall” which is essentially the hierarchy of who gets paid back/earns money at what time.   This was essentially a test/favor for Jonah to give him experience.  It didn’t lose money which is nice, but he wouldn’t go to director jail if it broke even or underperformed.  A24 is a talented distributor and could probably pre-sell the movie internationally and through VOD services to recoup that very small amount of money even with the lack of star power.   I’d guess this was a quid pro quo (who knows what he had to do) like when Universal did the last movie Angelina Jolie directed, knowing it was no good, because she was going to be their Bride of Frankenstein (before the whole Dark Universe CU collapsed).  Anyways sorry

It's literally 2021 and we still have not seen digital proof of Jonah landing a moving kickflip...what should we do?

Should we jump into his DM's?

Call out Mikey Alfred repeatedly until Jonah the Whale Kick flips?

or

Get back to very boring office work that I'm putting off because I detest my current existence?????

It's not perfect, but as far as non-documentary skate movies I've seen, it's second only to Kids. What else beats it? I'm genuinely curious. Maybe I need to rewatch Thrashin' and Gleaming the Cube to be sure. I haven't seen Ken Park.

You got peak Bam Margera acting his ass off (joke), Chad Fernandez acting like a 2000's white suburban rap dude, Matt Ball was a stunt double for one of the main characters and a solid 2000's soundtrack featuring Simple Plan, The Donnas, Sublime, Sean Paul, Trapt, The Used, Less Than Jake and last but certainly not least P.O.D

1. Thrashin'
- covers skateboarding pretty fucking proper

2. Gleaming the Cube
- I mean that diamond plate for grip at the end on an all black set up?! Cmon!?  Tony Hawk works for Pizza Hut in this, which would have been a reality if he didn't have integrity.

3. KIDS
-ultimate 90s look into the culture

4. Grind
- Perfect execution of failed acting careers, well Bam succeeded with all his shows, but Chad Fernandez tried so hard it's sad.

Depending on when you grew up skating and who influenced you this list should shuffle.

Don't even bring up hard flip, mid 90s or North Hollywood

Is Ken Park a skateboard film? Does it count if the first scene is a redhead blowing his brains out in a skate park?

I loved that the kids in the movie had a weight bench in their living room. It reminded me of my friends house when I was growing up. Just a bunch of 16 year olds living in the suburbs

True, Wassup Rockers is pretty sick.

I like to think of a skate movie as any movie with any degree of legitimate skateboarding or skaters in them. Kind of like how Die Hard is a Christmas movie. So, Police Academy 4, Gummo (Gonz), Mallrats (J Lee), Next Friday (Justin Pierce). What else?

Why is Kids considered a “skate” movie?
Because it has Video Days?
HH?
Independent shirts?

Am I missing something?

i think this is the exact reason Kids is the best "skate" movie in my opinion.

skating in itself can only be so engaging as a plot device and pales in comparison to the wealth of story telling options you have when depicting the lives of some skaters and their often despicable behavior. it might not be the most positive or comprehensive film adaptation of skating, but i'd argue its the most accurate.
