1994 (Fort Walton Beach, Fl) - After the Hell Tour World Demo I went to my local mall and the World Industries team had the same idea - unbeknownst to me. I saw Rodney Mullen reading a book outside of Aladdin’s Castle as I was walking to my record store. The rest of the World crew was inside Alladin’s Castle playing video games. Of course I recognized him and had to say hello. He was super kind and signed my motorcycle helmet (the only thing I had with me). I asked what he was reading and it was a math book (no shit).
1996 (Magic Mountain Los Angeles) - I was in California visiting for the first time and decided to spend the day riding rollercoasters with the friend I drove cross country with from Florida. I was already buzzing with excitement from just being in California and was scanning everyone’s shoes and shirts seeing if I noticed other skaters as we were walking through the park. I noticed 5-6 dudes walking around together that looked like skaters - except one of them had a button up cowboy shirt, cowboy boots, and a cowboy hat…it was Paulo Fucking Diaz walking around with Daniel Castillo, Gabe Rodriguez and the rest of the Chocolate Crew. I completely lost my shit internally but kept it together enough to approach them and say hello. I was 21 at the time and looked like a skater so it wasn’t too hard saying hi. They were all incredibly friendly and stoked that I talked to them. We actually hung out and all rode Goliath after that. One of the best days of my life.
2000 (Dortmund, Germany) Sean Sheffey shared his ostrich jerky with me in the parking lot at the hall where the world championships of skateboarding was taking place. Danny Way was with him and had a fresh black eye from the night before. I was stationed in Germany (Air Force) and went to Dortmund for the contests 2 of the years out of the 3 that I lived there. Good times for sure. Also, Danny Way was the only person I’ve ever been too intimidated to actually speak to other than hello and a handshake. Dude is gnarly af in person.
2005ish (Santa Maria, Ca) I was stationed at this point at Vandenberg AFB, Ca. My friend owned Dan owned One Way Board Shop in Santa Maria, Ca. He told me the Blind team was coming through for a demo so I was stoked to see Markovich. He is from Gulf Breeze, Fl, and I thought it would be cool to say hi and let him know I was from another town super close to him - and we actually had met and skated together before more than a decade prior to that very briefly in Niceville, Fl - small world. When I finally saw him and awkwardly said hi at the demo he was not interested in where I was from, that we had previously met, or that I was a fan of his skating…but it was cool seeing him skate in person like always. Oh well.
