Yeah it's definitely iffy. I could believe he chose it just because it means "life" and he might just be unaware of its racist connotations, as i was until now. It sucks that that board exists though if neo nazis buy it for those reasons and NHS profit from it. Between 10/10, the Indy logo and this it definitely looks like "where there's smoke there's fire" type situation right now.

A Norwegian guy who’s into black metal!? Obviously a racist. Come on people, he’s a sick pagan with gravette rails. I met this dude at the creature video premiere a while back. Him and Ryan Reyes are the some of the nicest pros I’ve met. We got drunk and had tacos. Ended up leaving the place with a creature sleeping bag body suit which was made at a higher quality than I thought it would be. Bækkel is pretty sick.

I feel like its pretty obvious what side of things these shop owners are on, given all the information put together and proper context. But all this shit about all these different symbols is wack. The Nazis just re-appropriated symbols from a bunch of different places and groups as their own. If you go back far enough, they don't have anything to do with nazism. I think the double S's are the only actual nazi symbol, I could be wrong, I honestly don't know. I feel like people getting offended at these symbols in every context, no matter what is just silly. It almost validates the nazis stealing them in the first place, like you calling them "nazi symbols" is just showing respect for them claiming the symbols. People should reclaim these symbols for what they really are instead of being afraid of them for what they are not. Baekkel is from an entirely different country with an entirely different culture, rooted deep in viking history. To make claims about him from our non-norwegian perspective is pretty ignorant. We really don't have an idea what any of those symbols mean over there. All this being said, fuck ACTUAL racists/nazis/whatever, but riding indy's doesn't make you a nazi, BEING A NAZI MAKES YOU A NAZI. That Darkthrone song is from way after those dudes publicly disavowed the racist posturing they did in their early 20s (which never reflected any real conviction and was mostly contained in the liner notes of one album from I think 1992). And as far as black metal at large goes, Darkthrone is not even close to being a part of the bigger problem of racist/nationalist bands, which has been a huge topic of discussion among metal writers for the last few years.  In other words, the song by itself doesn't connect the dots quite like one might think.

I agree.  The song in itself is not totally incriminating.   But when you put together a questionable song, and questionable rune graphics, at what point do you not raise the suspicion?

Regarding the Elhaz rune:

Yeah it's definitely iffy. I could believe he chose it just because it means "life" and he might just be unaware of its racist connotations, as i was until now. It sucks that that board exists though if neo nazis buy it for those reasons and NHS profit from it. Between 10/10, the Indy logo and this it definitely looks like "where there's smoke there's fire" type situation right now.

Also was just reminded by an article i was reading this morning, that the SS double lightning bolts logo from their SYLSS tshirt is commonly used by the Aryan Brotherhood, who are a big deal in American  prisons, and these fatboys proudly call themselves "Two Felons"

Let's not forget that baekkel also used some questionably racist black metal for at least one of his parts.  When a whole bunch of interpretable/dubious stuff starts adding up, it becomes harder to say "oh it's probably just coincidence, he probably uses it for its original meaning, etc"

That Darkthrone song is from way after those dudes publicly disavowed the racist posturing they did in their early 20s (which never reflected any real conviction and was mostly contained in the liner notes of one album from I think 1992). I'm saying the song isn't actually questionable, it's totally fine and isn't a good data point for these purposes. I say this as a person who understands the actual context from having listened to and followed metal closely for most of my life, and I go out of my way to stay informed enough so that I don't listen to a single racist band. Like I said, racist black metal is plentiful and some of it is passable for the style, so you have to stay alert. Lots of other metalheads like me, probably a solid majority, don't have a problem with any era of Darkthrone because none of it is actually racist, so if that changes matters...

That's a fair assessment - DGK is their coverup brand.
