Some of you are acting like bagel bites aren’t a slippery slope?  They seem like a small harmless snack, but once you put pizza on a bagel you can eat pizza anytime™️.  That’s not exactly a healthy relationship to pizza, don’t ask me how I know.

Bro, you work for Draft Kings or something?

Gambling is one of the worst vices someone can get into.  Pretty shameless to promote that shit.

Fucking hell. Here's my last pot on the matter. I'm so confused to see so many people have an issue with putting money on a sports game. I don't use Draft Kings nor do I care if you like it or not, but there's tons of people who use it responsibly to have fun with it and, in the same instance in any sort of medium, it can be used poorly as well. Of course gambling is an issue with people. So we should just outright ban sports betting? I'm lost why that's a controversial take that we shouldn't just sweepingly ban things than can cause people harm. Fully ban alcohol. fully ban cigarettes. Fully ban fast food. fully ban social media apps. Let people decide what they want to do with their money. Fuck some regulatory environment saying what I can and can't do. Doesn't seem like a controversial take, but apparently SLAP is so bummed Tony Hawk is promoting the option for people to bet money on something they enjoy.

ACLU and CNPS will gladly take your money instead of betting it.
If you have earned money from betting, the ACLU and CNPS will gladly take it from you.

Shameless plug for ACLU and CNPS.
I don’t work for either, but donate to both.

Gambling companies are trying to tik-tokify (not my expression) gambling by using idiots like Logan Paul to promote gambling on every play.   It’s going to hook a lot of kids/teens into an addictive process born out of an already additive process (tik tok/social media).
[close]

Serious questions: Should we ban Tik Tok and Instagram? I fully agree the addiction with social media is a big issue. So is the answer an outright ban? If there's vessels that lead to addiction, like social media apps, should those be allowed? Is a social media addiction worse than a gambling addiction? And who should have the final say on what is banned or allowed? A government decision? Is there a way to interact with a social media app that is healthy and good? I would argue yes and that's the same logic on why something like sports betting is fine. Going down the road of outright banning things that can lead to people making bad decisions is scary. Not the world I want to live in.

This shit was legalized like five minutes ago and you’re acting like it’s a time honored tradition and we don’t want to consider what America would be like if you couldn’t use an app to wager your family’s mortgage against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

you clearly do not watch sports. gambling apps and their advertisements are the most predatory industry currently operating. they are designed to prey on teenagers and the poor. they routinely break federal laws and are almost completely unregulated. watching any sporting event you cannot ignore any of these apps for typically more than 30 seconds at a time. if you don’t see how gamifying an addiction and forcing every sports fan to think about it every second is a problem idk what to do for you

I can't believe you're serious with this shit. As if someone sees a sports betting app and says, "Fuck it, everything I've worked for I'm throwing it on a sports game! Let's go! I can't control myself, the mortgage is live on this game!"

And never once did I act like sports betting is some sacred act. It's just another thing people can choose to do or not like anything else in the world. Just don't tell me I can or can't make my own choice with my own money. Keep pushing for never ending regulation on things you deem morally unfit for the population. That's always worked out well in the past.

literally no one is saying to outlaw betting, it's a matter of turning it into like candy crush combined with all the most addictive aspects of social media apps, and with "free" bets, and having access to instant high interest loans/credit that you don't need to ask a sketchy guy named larry the loan shark for... is kinda another thing entirely

Completely Unregulated? You think they’re designed to target “teenagers and the poor”?  I’m not sure you understand how they make their money, but teenagers and the poor are not the most profitable customer base for collecting vigs.

The ads are extremely prevalent currently because they are rapidly fighting for market share as the laws against sports betting are loosened.  The guy who joking quoted Lenny Kirk (quit sinnin’) accidentally hit the nail on the head of a major factor as to why gambling has been illegal so long.  The Christian roots of our country, but states are starting to realize it’s just another vice that a consenting adult could chose to pass the time.  I don’t gamble myself but you pious clowns seem to know what interests people should be ok with and which are irredeemable which must be great.

Draft kings stock is way down from the highs of 2020-2021 (like all gaming stocks and the market in general) and they are not profitable by any metric, the advertising push is a gamble on growth.  You think gambling on sports is evil and unregulated check out the stock market.  Oh wait, you white knights wanna burn that down too, because that will solve greed and vice, thanks heros.

Some of you guys need to step out the bubble and realise the horse already bolted a long time ago. Skateboarding is a sport now. Sports stars promotes a plethora of things... gambling being one of them. If Tony did a Heineken ad it'd be just another brand in his portfolio.

I get that people still want to protect the skate community and stick it to the man but it's pretty much frivolous now all your favourite pros have or still do collect cheques from slave driving corps. I'd understand if Tony was promoting crypto gambling sites/scams by streaming himself playing rigged versions of the game using the money they gifted him and completely unregulated - like many influencers and YouTubers as of late.... But this is a commercial with Ludacris, Undertaker and Kevin Hart, if this gets you so worked up then how are you actually functioning in today's society, like really?

Hell yeah it all sucks but the world has been like this for a while now... Have we burned the Piss Drunx at the stake yet for shamelessly promoting a lifestyle of addiction to a whole generation of our community too? Skateboarding needs to be progressive for sure but with a culture built upon the foundations of such a twisted past you guys have to understand it's going to be a lot more nuanced than 'skater does gambling commercial = cancelled', if it was that black and white the whole industry would implode.

Why you bringing Mikey Taylor into this?

What keeps most people out of casinos is the same kook feeling that most noobs get at Core stores. but they'll buy that ripndip with furry Krux and rasta grizzly grip from the comfort of their bedroom. Same with betting apps. It makes spending/wasting/risking your money on the wrong shit just so damn easy, convenient and with no judgement.

Can you gambling aficionados take that shit to Reddit or atleast the whatever section. Or just exchange phone numbers and continue privately. Best of luck and/or I’m sorry you lost your girls car to Fanduel. Better luck in march.

More videos of mikey Taylor telling me how to get rich with step 1 being “know people that will spot you money, a lot of money. Like atleast a million to start” and tyshawn skating over trashcans in clogposites.

Doesn't seem like a controversial take, but apparently SLAP is so bummed Tony Hawk is promoting the option for people to bet money on something they enjoy.

you clearly do not watch sports. gambling apps and their advertisements are the most predatory industry currently operating. they are designed to prey on teenagers and the poor. they routinely break federal laws and are almost completely unregulated. watching any sporting event you cannot ignore any of these apps for typically more than 30 seconds at a time. if you don’t see how gamifying an addiction and forcing every sports fan to think about it every second is a problem idk what to do for you

If you want an example of capitalist realism, look no further than the baked-in assumptions that things like the stock markets and advertisements are good and natural, representing some kind of true freedom. If we did away with legalized and largely unregulated app-based sports betting - this thing which only emerged in the last ~5 years - the consequences to our personal freedoms would be too dire to calculate.

You're talking big picture/long term with people who are mostly concerned about instant results in the short term.

There's no point in trying man.

Gambling is a horrible vice, the gambling industry is predatory, this is true.

But I would argue that strict government intervention/regulation has far worse implications in the long run. It's much easier to takedown a predatory private party than a predatory government. If I have to choose between one or the other existing, its going to be the private party.

Both options have their flaws, decide which flaws you would rather deal with. People having the ability to potentially ruin themselves financially (which they can do in several other completely legal ways). Or reinforcing the precedent that the government can/should ban peoples ability to do what they please.

Tax the fuck out of gambling (like most vices are, I say we add fast food to the list) and use the revenue for a good cause. affordable housing, hell even gambling addiction treatment. Casinos should be required to post the odds of winning the games being played in clear sight near each game. Inform people, let them make their own (stupid) decisions.

I say all of this as someone who has been to a casino exactly 3 times in my life, never because i wanted to, and I dont ever plan on going to one again. Not my thing, but im not gonna try and stop other people.

I smoked cigs/vaped for years, that shit was dumb and unhealthy but i dont think we should ban those things. I would argue those industries are far more predatory since they literally destroy you form the inside out.

We're all gonna die anyway, have some fun while you're here. Dont be a fucking idiot about it, and if you do, its not my or the goverments fault.

That shit in bold will never happen and modern gambling is made predatory as fuck. I cant watch a UFC fight without odds dropped in my face every round. I can't imagine if I watched other sports how bad it would be.

The problem with online gambling is the same with social media, it's in your face and accessible instantly all the time.

This argument doesn't work when the point is making money through taxes from gambling it's not about people's ability to do what they please it's just another income source lololol

well not with that attitude it wont.

I dont understand at all what you are trying to explain in that last line. For me personally, its definitely about people being able to do what they want. In spite of me not wanting to engage in that activity, i believe having the freedom to do so is very important. thats why i referenced tobacco products too.

might as well try and make the best of it by taxing it accordingly.
