This video, more often than any other, gets singled out as an example of one of the worst. But until last night I hadn't even seen it. Indeed, my expectations were very low, but nonetheless I was impressed. Here's why:
Kanten: he gets tech, he gets gnar. Those back-to-back, fatty-to-fatty back 360s were superhuman.
Knight: the guy's solid. So what if he shares a name with a gay porn star.
Hsu: Funny how this guy's so much in fashion now, because in '99 he was illusion-flipping like everyone else.
Lussier: I had no idea the guy was that good
I actually enjoyed the tracks and the kits in this vid. A refreshing change from the whiny indie rock and the neo-bohemian combos that have taken over the last few years. I'm going to stick my neck out and say the soundtrack, for the most part, was better than, say, Static II's (which mostly sucked).
Dobstaff, Kasper and Tyrone might be lacking in the style dept., but they put on a good show. That one curvy rail that Tyrone 5050s is out of hand. Mayhew's tailslide impossible out on that curved ledge was a never-been done so far as I know, and Chad Fernandez's rail tricks are still eye-poppers to this day.
Smolik's shared part with Brandon Turner was hype too. The late '90s aesthetic (track pants, anyone?) might not be in vogue right now, but that's no reason to bash a vid stacked with first-rate footage.
