Too much pop for too little speed
« on: November 05, 2018, 05:22:49 AM »
Anyone ever thought about this? If you pop your tricks really high you also need to have a shit load of speed or else you look like a frog. Case in point our Brazilian friends.

Discuss.

Exactly. I have a buddy who pops all his tricks thigh high and is always doing ollies and heelflips over chains and flatbars higher than most people could jump with no board, but he does all his tricks at a snails pace. He usually rolls away from his tricks for about 2 feet before the board stops rolling.
I guess he's still cooler than me who goes slow AND has no pop.
i pop my shields and sprinkle some sand in there. i want to make sure i approach that ledge as slow as possible so i dont slip out on my 5050s

Who are you talking about? Luan never does anything without piling on the speed and Tiago aint sliding those 20-foot long back tails from standstill. Rodrigo(s), Iqui and Cerezini are all about average speedwise, si no?

I'm actually really into this kind of skating. To me it's crazy when you have no speed and just boost shit

Zach Lyons goes slow and has hella pop.
Also has baby feet, he said so himself in an interview. Love watching him skate though.

Dog you ever seen that thing with Rodney explaining Ollie height. He had some math equation or some shit for it in a mag back in the day, but the gist of it, is that if you want to maximize potential energy squatting is the way to go. If you ever watch Rodney skate to, notice how he subconsciously goes into a fingerflip position when he Ollie’s. He does that so he can remember to squat all the way down. I also think the squat looks worse on short people, like there are numerous tall dudes that really squat, but u never really notice because they are lengthy.

If I squatted like the Rodders my chin would hit the floor, not because I have a big chin but because I have small shins!

Skating should be fast, if it's slow it looks bad no matter how high the trick are popped

Skating can be photogenic at all speeds, sometimes to extremes where photos do better justice (Kenny Reed) V.S. video showing the style over photos (Jon Dixon).

This thread is making me feel incredibly self-conscious.  I've have kids call me out on my squat over the years.  I try to correct it, but recently coming back from a knee injury last week a kid called me out and asked, "Why do you bend down so far?".  I think he also said it seems harder but that also just pissed me off.

He was right though, which I loved because he couldn't do what I was doing.  I don't know, I hate that habit. If Mullen says it is cool, I'll take that defect.

If it makes you feel better, coming back from an injury makes it easier to re-learn without the bad habit that you once had. Had a similar issue myself and was able to correct it after a 2 year hiatus.

One of the very first times I ever skated with Sean Payne we were at this set of six stairs that’s more like a big six actually since the steps are pretty wide, anyway he was rolling super slow going towards the set.

I was convinced he was slow rolling it so he could check out the distance and height before actually trying anything, I mean he had to be, he was going so fucking slow. I mean creeping at a snail’s pace basically.

BAM! He did a fucking giant, beautiful, perfect kickflip and casually landed like it was the most normal thing in the world to him.

Right after that he did a hardflip down it and there is a sequence of it in an old Big Brother mag and I actually got BGPs in there, sitting down dumbfounded.

Also he was riding his board backwards, like he always did.
Freak of fucking nature, but in a really good way.
