Set-up OCD
« on: November 07, 2018, 04:36:52 PM »
Post in the F4 thread made me think of my own set-up quirks.

-Top left bolt in my front truck must be a different color from the rest.
-Wheel graphics must face in or be removed altogether.

What weird shit do you all do?

Not OCD, but if the grip tape doesn’t “feel” right I don’t feel good with the deck. I’m pretty sure all the decks I’ve focused have been set ups with grip that doesn’t feel right.

Colored bolt at top right.  I also get super ocd about my trucks tightness.  I need for front and back to be the same so im constantly messing with them until they are right

- 3 wheel graphics in, 1 out
- grip over the bolts and then use Allen key/ Phillips head to let the bottom left-hand bolt of my front truck show through (ever so slightly)
- must do some sort of grip design, can't just be all black
- bearings must have full service if I'm changing out wheels
- no red plies/ bushing/ wheels

Thought I didn't really have any, but then I remembered it bugs the shit out of me when I see people skating without their bolts sunk fully into their deck. I also rotate my wheels to try to get them to wear evenly, but I'm not really OCD about it.

I have tried a few times over the years to switch it up and do something with my set up, but I always go back to my standard ride. All black grip, wheel graphics turned in, all silver trucks, and a sticker or two towards the nose. I did it subconsciously when I was young and now it’s became a necessity. I’m all for multi colored wheels, trucks, and some crazy grip, but it throws me of.

Kingpin nut has to always be winded  like this <[]>  not like this [^] diamond style, idk why I just need it straight not pointy

Trucks must also be same tightness or the back just a tad more, it’s a Incase I am in switch or fakie I mentally think it’s the same even though riding one side majority will make the board lean that way

And same as above, bolts must be flush with grip

I always have to do some kind of grip design right above the bottom bolts. It always involves stickers from a brewery or random local companies, but never skate brands. And I always put two silver bolts at the front, but I think a lot of people do that. Although, My friend put the two silver bolts on the back trucks to fuck with me, and it fucked with me hard. It's like nails on a chalk board.

I hate getting gum or dog shit on my griptape. I hate getting both on my griptape. So my ideal griptape is just plain black jessup and I REALLY get bummed out if there's gum or shit on it.

I get OCD about having feces or gum on my grip.

I used to skate this spot where bums would just post up and there would be corners and spots where there is just human shit. Human poop is literally the worst poop of them all.

Uneven wear only happenend to me when i was riding really tight trucks. Since i switched to looser trucks its not happening anymore.

My grip needs to be completely black. When i get a grip for free which has some shit on it. It gets discarded.
My wheels need to be white(graphic facing inside) and the trucks have to be raw. I´m a pretty plain dude i guess. Full-dip boards are also a no-go.

Rail edge has to be my thumb nail width in, regardless of trimmed or not
Bolts tightened crossways

I follow the herd on the white wheels graphics in, raw trucks, black grip stuff. Wouldn’t really call that OCD, so much as what’s cool and popular to do. I do like to have 7 black bolts (allen, duh) and to put a silver bolt in the top right mounting hole for my back truck. I put my foot just barely on it when I set up for switch/nollie flips and most variations. Not sure if it helps or hurts me but I have to do it.

White wheels
Silver trucks
No stickers
Solid black grip
trucks the same tightness
nuts always perfectly flush
switch trucks from front to back when setting up a new board
wheel graphics in
silverado hardware with one silver in the upper right position and one in the lower left position
tighten all hardware in a cross pattern
top of hardware nearly flush with the grip
drop of speed cream/bike chain lube in the pivot cups when setting up new trucks unless Riptide pivots are used
about 1-2mm of side to side play in the wheels

I hate being me

Always tighten the trucks so that they show equal thread, then loosen the front half a turn.
Tighten the trucks to the board in a X pattern (which one should do anyway).
Always a colored bolt in the front top left.

I like this thread. It makes me feel less crazy

For me I need all black grip, colored bolts on back truck, no dirt or spots. I find this shit incredibly distracting when I skate. Also crazy about truck tightness. I will adjust them for hours to get them just right.

Blank griptape cut and applied to the point of absolute perfection. Any curves/bumps in the cut drives me insane and I have peeled off and thrown away brand new grip that wasn't perfect. I also clean off any dirt or whatever that ends up on my board from skating. It's a legitimate obsessive tendency.

No stickers ever.

Silver trucks.

White wheels turned in with one turned out.

Bolts need to be black with no signs of rust (I  am one of the only people I know who buys bolts every year or so).

Oh, and I’d rather not skate at all than look down and see philips head hardware.  Allen or nothing.

Raw Trucks
Wheel graphic facing inward
Black Grip

Must sand the grip on the top left of my nose and bottom left of tail before skating a new board or I am total mind fucked

8-8.125 deck, 51-52 mm wheels, 8-8.25 trucks, I always do a "philly/eastcost-stripe(?)", not gripping all the way over the edge on the toe side with most visible deck by the back pocket.
I'll try anything, I do gripjobs with cheetah print or tie dye, I have tons of different colored trucks and wheels, graphics whichever way they happen to be in my hand, I prefer to have one colored bolt top left, but I'd do all black or all colored as well.

So yeah, no ocd, just preferred sizes...

4 silver (or bronze) bolts, 4 black. 1 sticker. Break/line in grip anywhere.

No top color ply superstition but I prefer 1.) navy 2.) orange 3.) green
