pretty sure this article [http://www.jenkemmag.com/home/2018/12/12/can-help-keep-skate-shops-alive/comment-page-2/] is about to be its own thread (the debate on deck prices wages on!), but i think that this small piece of information is more relevant here. concerned_parent, you can now start thinking of taglines jenkem can insert into their articles to thank you.

Jenkem: Recently, Urban Outfitters started selling skateboards in a partnership with Skate Warehouse. All the skate brands sold on UO’s site agreed to this. Do you think this will affect the industry?

No-Comply (Austin, TX): For the brands selling to Urban Outfitters, it’s understandable that a quick buck is intoxicating and that they want to get paid. But it’s a one night stand and they are not going to answer your call tomorrow. They are notorious for taking a brand in and if it works well, they just make their own version of it and get rid of the original. By that time, the original skate shops might be gone or they won’t take your call anymore either.

i was interested to read that, considering we kind of broached that topic here:

They probably bought from some distribution company

Yup, they have Skate Warehouse wheels on there so that probably where they’re getting their stock.

This is EXACTLY what's happening.  Urban Outfitters has now opened up their website to 3rd party selling, no different than Amazon. I know that Skate Warehouse got calls from a few brands threatening to close their accounts if their brand appeared on the Urban Outfitters website. It's fucked because it makes it seem as if brands are selling directly to UO which is NOT the case.

seems like there were more brands that agreed to the UO deal than there were those threatening to close their accounts.

what even is skateboarding these days.

the No Comply answer is completely inaccurate.  Brands are NOT selling directly to UO.  UO is now allowing people to use their website as a 3rd party platform, such as Amazon.  Skate Warehouse is who agreed to work with UO, no brands.  SW moves a lot of product, so obviously some brands have turned a blind eye, because "in theory", the brand is not selling to UO.  And Skate Warehouse didn't contact any brands to ask if this was cool.  Shit there's brands that might not even know.  They just went and did it, thinking they could sell wherever they wanted.  I think a lot of brands may also look at the amount of their product that is on UO and not think it's that big enough of a deal to warrant a call to SW, and possibly ruffle some feathers with a hi volume account.

where will Skate Warehouse draw the line. First Urban Outfitters, next Macys, Walmart, Fred Meyer, KB Toys, Backpage, Craigslist, etc. Parents are not too dumb to do an internet search for "skate shop" to find SW, Socal, Tactics or whatever. Why do these boards need to be moved through UO. A brick and Mortar skate shop is supposed to get access to sell exclusive skateboarding products and brands. DLX is telling lots of shops not to sell their shit online but letting the product be on the UO site. I get its kiddie completes but still, Anti Hero should not be a brand sold on UO. Its fucking up my tough guy 18 steelo. All the kids mock me even more now "did your mom get you that board at Urban Outfitters"

Edit: The damage is already done, and the kids still mock my denim vest and crappy beer, but Im glad to hear DLX got The One Eight completes of the UO site.

that would seem to contradict what jenkem wrote - "All the skate brands sold on UO’s site agreed to this."

are you saying that that statement by jenkem is inaccurate? (btw, i'm not defending jenkem, i just want to get to the bottom of this.) because in looking at the skate goods sold on UO and comparing those to the ones sold on SW, there are definitely a lot of bigger companies that are missing from UO's lineup (e.g., nhs, dlx). that would seem to suggest that they didn't agree to be sold on UO's site.

which adds another wrinkle to this story, because when UO's skate shop debuted, they definitely featured dlx product (maybe even nhs? i can't recall), but now that stuff is nowhere to be found. (just try googling "urban outfitters anti-hero" or "urban outfitters santa cruz skateboards" - all the links have been deaded.) so maybe initially SW didn't check with the brands? then once the news broke, dlx and nhs called in to get their stuff removed from UO's site?

UOI Corporate if you're reading this you can hire me back as your skateboard consultant for a lot more money, a written apology from Mr. Burns lookin ass Zausner for being generally unpleasant, and Dick Hayne has to let me use his private bathroom (the one at his house) whenever I motherfucking want to. My only stipulations are that everyone has to listen to every word I have to say and you cannot sell skateboards.

I don't want to say that the Jenkem statement is accurate or inaccurate, as I don't have firsthand knowledge of the brands that are on the UO site.  But I DO have firsthand knowledge that SW was definitely the one who initiated this whole thing unbeknownst to the brands that were originally put up on the UO site as a 3rd party platform.  And I definitely saw DLX/NHS product on there, so being that it is no longer there, they may have called SW and told them they weren't allowed to push those brands through UO.
