Skaters Too Good for Their Sponsors
« on: January 11, 2019, 07:40:04 PM »
Reading that Yoshi Tananbaum is on FP Footwear got me thinking about the instances where a skater is too good for his (or her) sponsors.

-A lot of people think Tom Asta shouldn’t be on Santa Cruz.

-Before Tiago got on Primitive, he seemed like a very big fish in Boulevard’s small pond.

What are some others?

Just some odd sponsor shit...

Austyn has no board sponsor, which is downright shameful... Soon no shoe sponsor as well. Quite similar to the situation Dylan found himself in with Gravis and Workshop.

Jaime Foy never made sense on Diamond footwear.

Dill on adidas is weird... Wyd Vans?

Dill left Vans because despite his tortured artist image, he likes cash - lots of it. Adidas is willing to pay him as an icon pro, which is really wild to think about as a matter of talent relative to his peers.

Id love to know why he left WKND.  None of those involved seem the type to air out their dirty laundry publicly (if there even is any), so I guess all one can do is speculate.  It seemed like a great fit, at least from the outside looking in.

I think it’d be kind of sick if he got on Heroin.

I think he meant it in the sense that there probably aren’t a lot of teenie boppers walking in to their local Zumiez thinking “I hope they have that new Austyn Gillette board.”

Pabst brings a point, possibly a new thread - Pro/Ams with all the talent, and little to no marketability. It's an endless pit of rippers with no one having their back. Lance's 9 club brought it up(sort of)- much like the USA Network, characters are welcome (and do better in skateboarding) and embraced and loved.

Damn I left my bubbler at my parents house

In his Bunt interview he kind of alluded to the fact that he didn't think the company was being run at its full potential.

Austyn is hell of alot more marketable compared to some pros out there for example Scott Decenzo. Austyn has that swan princess elegant Dylan Reider swag whitch is a big selling feature on it's own. But I would not put his level of skating in the category with the uber elites in any way.

Austyn is definitely marketable. Being one of the best contemporaries in skateboarding should be enough in my mind. Stylish, articulate, skates fast, surfs, and is a musician. Honestly, watchin him push gets me stoked to get on a board. Is he not guzzlin enough silver bullets, and blazin fat sacks of weed for you to see the desire for some Gillette gear? I think thats on you.

Austyn was the new fresh thing yesterday, not today.  Thats why dude is right about him being unmarkerable.  Hes too much a representation of what was happening right b4 the trend switch to the GX thing and aiden macky and whatnot

At first i was offended by the idea that Austyn isn't marketable but when you think about which of the top brands could you see him endorsing succesfully? Maybe FA?, adidas? i cant think of any others

Glad to see Scott Decenzo’s name popping up again as a synonym for “...who?”

But I couldn’t possibly disagree with you more about Austyn’s skating; I’d absolutely put it at the “elite” level.  But to each their own.
