been trying to catch up on some podcasts and recently took down an interview julian davidson did back in december 2018 on the desiree show. (for those unfamiliar with the desiree show, it's kind of a weird listen. she hits her guests with mushy quotes she gets from people that are close to them. it feels pretty awkward. occasionally there's some gold in there however. see https://www.slapmagazine.com/index.php?topic=102209.0.)

anyways, i remember watching a couple of months ago this thing the x games put out on youtube - "skaters in cars." chris nieratko driving around julian davidson and nick garcia while also interviewing them. he talks about how he's just recently coming of of ankle surgery, and for about 30 seconds, he talks about how he's been sober for ten months and turned his life around, but that was about all the detail he got into. well during this interview on the desiree show he really gets into it. the story starts at 38:24 - https://soundcloud.com/the-desiree-show/julian-davidson-12-18-19.

i guess it's not too crazy of a story considering some of the wild personalities in skateboarding, but it did kind of help to clear up the picture as to why perhaps his part in peace wasn't all that amazing, or why it was a bit of a surprise he seemed to be of etnies immediately preceding the release of album. sometime during the summer of 2017, he was supposed to catch a plane to barcelona for a two-month element trip to film for peace. problem was he had been partying (pills and booze) for days, and was what he described as "malnourished." he shows up to the airport pretty hammered, causing a scene. cops tell him he's not getting on the plane and he flips out. threw him into the drunk tank. misses the flight, obviously, so there goes what could have been two-months worth of footage. tries to book another flight, but really he's in no physical condition to be doing much of anything, let alone skate. cole mathews (then the element tm) and his mom work together to get him into a 30-day treatment center. completes that and has been sober since august 5, 2017. then that ankle surgery must have laid him up for awhile too. hope he gets back to it. having a cousin that i'm really close to who also skates, i have a bit of a soft spot for his and nick garcia's relationship.

Julian was in my city in AUS last week with tommy fynn and a few others filming a clip with James James. pretty certain Julian wasn't drinking from what i saw.

Around the same time as the Skaters in Cars segment, Julian had an interview in Thrasher. It was part of the Peace video promotional issue. It didn't really stray from the standard narrative but yeah he realized that he was blowing it and sobered up.

I wonder if this is just a marketing ploy. He and his sponsors could tell his generic image and average tricks werent going to get him much further, so they went for the tried and true "edgy party guy goes sober" gimmick. If it worked for half of Baker its gotta work for him too right?

I'm surprised Nick Garcia didn't get more shine after his part in the Element video - it was one of the standouts. That back noseblunt was ridiculously gnarly.

Plus I think he looks dashing in those new glasses!
