When I watch people that are good at skating ride around my local I notice that they have a different level of control than me. I've been skating for 11 years now, I can land hard tricks from time to time but I skipped a lot of basics just by virtue of not trying them. When I skate it feels like my brain's signals to my feet are muddled while everyone else's are clear. How do I make it feel more clear and effectively gain control over my board?
I feel you man. I am 34 years old I have been skating and I sometimes bail two 50-50s in a row...
Alot has to do with talent I guess. It has never come completely natural to me to do tricks, I am a taller and naturally heavier guy, but I have always skated alot and I have done some difficult tricks I guess, but I have always bailed alot more than most of my friends.
In the past years I have increased my board control alot, though. I had chronic inflamation in my right ancle and I couldn't really skate for a whole year. When I started again I would skate short sessions, I would stretch and I would do alot of manuals on the ground to strengthen my ancles. Also I would push switch alot. Skateboarding has also become a different thing for me. While it used to be all about agression and going fast I enjoy the playful vibe of it more now. I obsess less about landing a particular trick and I try to pay attention more on how it feels. If I cannot land a trick I am usually fine just putting it off for another day. I used to get super frustrated and try a trick until I landed it of until I was completely exhausted. To sum it up: my advise for getting more boardcontrol is: Manuals, stretching, short but frequent sessions, push arround switch and don't obsess about landing everything the first day you try it.
Also, apply the Andy Anderson method, which is all about maximizing control and creativity:
