How do I build board control?
« on: February 05, 2019, 07:32:18 PM »
When I watch people that are good at skating ride around my local I notice that they have a different level of control than me. I've been skating for 11 years now, I can land hard tricks from time to time but I skipped a lot of basics just by virtue of not trying them. When I skate it feels like my brain's signals to my feet are muddled while everyone else's are clear. How do I make it feel more clear and effectively gain control over my board?

Stop trying advanced tricks until you have the basics down.

Practice the basics, but going faster than you normally do. Get cooking on flat and then just do kickflips and shuvs. Once you slow it back down to your normal speed everything will feel more comfortable

I'd say stop focusing so much. Allow your body to automatically take over like when you drive from point A to point B, but don't remember the details of how you got there.
I don’t care what anyone says, a tit mouse’s tibia is a thing of beauty.

Get a good feeling for your trucks. They are honestly the most important part of a skateboard.

Ollies, skating street, bumping on cracks, powersliding. Learn shifty ollies and 180s both ways and go fast

You have to build your own beast.  Your own shit.  Develop character in ur skating.  I heard once that Julian never tries the same trick twice. Even if he almost landed a trick he tries a new one the next go.  Ur not going pro anyway so keep it stress free.

Skate everywhere you possibly can - To the grocery store, to the bar, to work, to the end of your driveway to pick up the mail etc.

Bomb more parking garage. Find a good one and work on your footing, not having to push consistently down them gives your brain a second to readjust on where your feet should be.

This thread is breaking my heart ked. 11yrs? Hmmm. I’m willing to bet your just not liking the local or you’re not having fun or something. I feel like this sometimes but I’m disabled and shit.
But I have an answer

Since I have like 3 decades on a board that makes me an official which doctor?
I’m going to prescribe 1000ug of lsd
a 14.5 wheelbase some risers and some 60+mm hard wheels hills with wallies and polejams. Skate from spot to spot switch only.

Leave your local leave your state leave your body
Bring your board

I feel you man. I am 34 years old I have been skating and I sometimes bail two 50-50s in a row...

Alot has to do with talent I guess. It has never come completely natural to me to do tricks, I am a taller and naturally heavier guy, but I have always skated alot and I have done some difficult tricks I guess, but I have always bailed alot more than most of my friends.

In the past years I have increased my board control alot, though. I had chronic inflamation in my right ancle and I couldn't really skate for a whole year. When I started again I would skate short sessions, I would stretch and I would do alot of manuals on the ground to strengthen my ancles. Also I would push switch alot. Skateboarding has also become a different thing for me. While it used to be all about agression and going fast I enjoy the playful vibe of it more now. I obsess less about landing a particular trick and I try to pay attention more on how it feels. If I cannot land a trick I am usually fine just putting it off for another day. I used to get super frustrated and try a trick until I landed it of until I was completely exhausted. To sum it up: my advise for getting more boardcontrol is: Manuals, stretching, short but frequent sessions, push arround switch and don't obsess about landing everything the first day you try it.

Also, apply the Andy Anderson method, which is all about maximizing control and creativity:
